International Current Affairs
  • Swiss president Doris Leuthard is on 3-day visit to India.
    • During this visit, India and Switzerland will hold extensive talks on entire gamut of bilateral relationship including on ways to ramp up trade and investment ties.
    • Leuthard will meet President Ram Nath Kovind and hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
    • In the talks, the Indian side may raise the issue of black money stashed by Indians in Swiss banks.
  • The annual La Tomatina festival was held in Spanish town Buñol today, amid increased security following several terror attacks. 
    • Considered the Biggest food fight in the world, thousands of participants threw an estimated 160 tonnes of tomatoes at each other. 
  • Lebanese President Michel Aoun has signed the country's first animal welfare bill into law, guaranteeing the legal protection of domestic and wild animals from abuse.
    • The law outlines requirements for keeping domestic pets, regulations for zoos, farms, and slaughterhouses, and stricter punishments for violations with fines and up to 4 years in prison.
  • The 10th India-European Union Counter Terrorism Dialogue was recently held at New Delhi.
    • During this dialogue, India and the European Union have agreed to strengthen cooperation between their security and intelligence agencies to combat the threat of terrorism and check terror financing. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Myanmar for conservation of earthquake-damaged pagodas at Bagan, Myanmar.
    • This MoU will be signed during official state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Myanmar during 6-7 September 2017.
  • The Union Cabinet has apprised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Brazil for cooperation in fields of Zebu Cattle Genomics and Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs).
  • The Cabinet also approved an MOU to set up US $40 million India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F)
    • Note : This MoU was signed in July, 2017 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel.
National Current Affairs
  • India's first indigenous sniper rifle was launched today at the Rifle Factory in West Bengal's Ishapore
    • Worth over ₹2.5 lakh and weighing 6.7 kg, the rifle has a shooting range of 800 metres and one of its advantages is reportedly the abundance of ammunition. 
  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today agreed to give the Sikh community in the state a 'Micro Minority status'.  
Recent Committees in news
  • The government has accepted 65 out of 99 recommendations of the Lt General DB Shekatkar-led committee, which will result in the redeployment of 57,000 Indian Army personnel for various other required duties.
    • Important Note : The Shekatkar Committee was appointed by the government to enhance the combat potential of the armed forces and rebalance defence expenditure.
Science & Technology
  • ISRO's Navigation satellite IRNSS-1H, which will expand the existing seven satellites of the NavIC constellation, is set to blast off today 7 pm from the Sriharikota rocket port. 
    • To be launched on board PSLV-C39 into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO), the 1425-kg satellite for navigation-related applications is the 8th satellite of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) . 
  • The United States has announced that it conducted a second series of test flights involving an upgraded version of its B61-12 gravity nuclear bombs, after the first successful test in March this year. 
    • The test comes amid rising tensions between the US and North Korea over the latter's missile programme and threats to strike the US territory of Guam.
  • The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved First Gene Therapy of pharma giant Novartis, a treatment that uses patient’s own immune cells to fight acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

  • Eminent Konkani writer Mahabaleshwar Sail was today honored with prestigious Saraswati Samman for the year 2016 for his novel “Hawthan (हावटण)”.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today announced only 1.4% of old ₹1,000 notes have not come back into the banking system post demonetisation. 
    • The central bank's annual report for FY17 revealed that out of 632.6 crore old ₹1,000 notes, 8.9 crore did not come back. 
  • RBI has notified commercial banks of at least 26 defaulter accounts with which it wants lenders to begin debt resolution before initiating bankruptcy proceedings. 
    • The RBI said these accounts should first be resolved through any of its schemes before December 13, failing which cases should be filed against the firms under Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code before December 31.

  • Indian basketball team captain Amritpal Singh became the first Indian player to be picked up by an Australian National Basketball League team, after signing for the Sydney Kings
