International Current Affairs
  • India and China have agreed to withdraw their troops from Doklam after being in a standoff for over two months. 
    • The standoff had started after India objected to China constructing a road in the disputed area.
  • Mexico will create a new division of the Federal Police to preserve and secure its cultural heritage.
    • The division would recruit officers with knowledge of archaeology and art to prevent thefts and looting of cultural artefacts.
National Current Affairs
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today inaugurated India's first 'Videsh Bhavan' in Mumbai. 
    • The Bhavan integrates all Ministry of External Affairs offices in Maharashtra under one roof, and will reportedly help in effective management. 
People in News
  • Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for rape by a special CBI court in Haryana. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Indian Commodity Exchange (ICEX) today commenced operations as the World's first diamond futures exchange
    • The exchange is backed by companies like Reliance Capital and MMTC.
  • 21 public sector banks have taken loan recovery action under SARFAESI Act against 5,954 wilful defaulters owing about ₹70,000 crore till the end of March 31, according to the Finance Ministry.
    • The State Bank of India (SBI) alone has taken action against 1,444 defaulters with outstanding loans of ₹20,943 crore. 
    • Important Note : All wilful defaulters combined owe public sector banks as much as ₹92,376 crore.
  • A Panel that was set up to look at all aspects of household finance in India has recommended that PAN card should be required for all gold transactions.
    • Previously, it was needed only for transactions over Rs. 2 lakh.
    • Moreover, to avoid gold transactions going underground, the committee suggested that all gold purchases be recorded using an electronic registry such as a depository.
    • The panel was chaired by : Tarun Ramadorai (Professor of financial economics)

  • Tobe Hooper (74), known for directing 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre', passed away. 
    • He was known for other films like 'Poltergeist'.
New Appointments
  • Justice Dipak Misra today took oath as the 45th Chief Justice of India.
    • He ha replaced former CJI JS Khehar who retired yesterday. 
    • Misra will hold office until his retirement on October 2, 2018. 
  • Top stock exchange BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange)'s board has approved another five-year term for its chief Ashish Chauhan, who has steered a strong turnaround and a highly- successful initial public offering (IPO) of the bourse with strong business expansion.
    • Chauhan, who joined BSE as deputy chief executive officer (CEO) in 2009, was made MD and CEO for a period of five years with effect from November 2, 2012.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has signed Rs.17,000 crore deal with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for producing advanced Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) system for Indian Army by 2020. 
    • The deal envisages develping 40 firing units and around 200 missiles.

  • American rapper-songwriter Kendrick Lamar today won a total of 6 awards at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) 2017, which included the Video of the Year award, for his track 'Humble'. 
    • Ed Sheeran was named Artist of the Year.
    • Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift won the VMA for Best Collaboration. 
    • Pink was honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Mercedes' British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton registered his 58th career race win after claiming the Belgian Grand Prix title today. 
  • Shuttler PV Sindhu became the 2nd Indian to win a Silver medal at the Badminton World Championships, losing to Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the women's singles final in Glasgow.
    • Note : Earlier, Saina Nehwal had claimed India's first silver at the world meet in 2015.
