International Current Affairs
  • Today (26th August) is the Women's Equality Day.
    • This day commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment (Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.
    • This day was first celebrated in 1973 and is proclaimed each year by the United States President.
  • US President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum that directs the US military to not accept transgender individuals as recruits and halts the use of government funds for sex-reassignment surgeries for active personnel unless the process is already underway.
    • This announcement reversed a policy shift started under his predecessor, President Barack Obama.
  • According to provisional census data released today, Pakistan's population has surged to over 20 crore, a 57% spike since the last census in 1998. 
    • The country has over 10 crore Males, over 10 crore Females and over 10,000 transgenders. 
    • Sindh surpassed Islamabad as the most urbanised territory, with over 52% residents in urban areas, the provisional data revealed.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in the Union Commerce Ministry has banned duty free imports of Gold, Silver items from South Korea.
    • These restrictions were imposed against the backdrop of sudden surge in imports of precious metals from South Korea, with which India has a free trade agreement (FTA) since January 2010.
  • The government has eased several norms for its flagship regional flying scheme UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) to attract more airlines and helicopter operators to participate in the regional connectivity scheme (RCS). 
    • The relaxations include dilution of exclusivity clause which mandated that only one airline flies on one route in the first three years. 
      • Now, selected airline operator of a particular route may issue no-objection certificate to other airlines who want to operate on the selected RCS route.  
    • The govt has also diluted norms that restricted two airports in close proximity with each other to participate in the bidding.  
      • The modified norms allow routes with a stage length less than 150 km for operations through fixed wing aircraft.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has constituted a Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for India’s Economic Transformation.
    • The 18 member task force will explore the possibilities to leverage AI for development across various fields. 
    • It will submit concrete and implementable recommendations for government, industry and research institutions.
    • It will comprise of experts, academics, researchers and industry leaders. 
    • Head of this Task Force : Dr. V. Kamakoti
Sports Current Affairs
  • Shuttler Saina Nehwal defeated Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour to reach the Badminton World Championships semifinals for the second straight time, assuring India of two medals. 
    • Earlier, Indian shuttler PV Sindhu defeated world number six Chinese Sun Yu to enter semifinals.
    • Note : This will be the first time that India will have two singles' medalists at the Badminton World Championships.
  • Distance runner Mo Farah won the final track race of his career, clinching a win in 5,000-metre final with a margin of 0.04 seconds at the Diamond League today. 
    • Note : Farah won a total of 10 gold medals at the Olympics and World Championships during his track career.
  • Barcelona today announced Ousmane Dembélé's signing from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of €105 million (₹800 crore), along with potential €42m in add-ons.
    • Important Note : This makes him the Second most expensive player ever behind Neymar
