International Current Affairs
- The "Big Ben" bell in UK Parliament's iconic clock tower will be silenced from today for next four years for renovation works.
- China is relaunching the Fastest bullet trains in the world, which run at 350 kilometres per hour.
- Ukraine has removed all 1,320 statues of the communist revolutionary Lenin as part of a government drive to rid the country of Soviet-era symbols.
National Current Affairs
- Union home minister Rajnath Singh today launched a Digital policing portal, making it possible to electronically apply and seek verifications for tenants, domestic helps and even passports.
- The initiative is a follow up of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems Project (CCTNS) or the crime and criminal tracking network system.
- The Defence Ministry has granted additional administrative and financial powers to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to speed-up the construction of roads along the Indo-China border.
Deaths
- American comedian-filmmaker Jerry Lewis (91), known for movies like 'The Nutty Professor' and 'The Bellboy' among others, passed away today.
- Lewis had collaborated with singer Dean Martin for comic acts and the duo starred in films like 'The Stooge' and 'Scared Stiff'.
- Bulgarian weightlifter Velichko Cholakov (35), an Olympic and world medallist, passed away.
- Cholakov took +105 kg bronze at the Athens 2004 Olympics and silver in the same division in the previous year's world championships.
Science & Technology
- China is going to launch the World's first nuclear power plant, the Sanmen Nuclear Power Station, that is immune to meltdown.
- The US and China jointly invested over ₹38,000 crore for building the reactor used in the plant.
- US-Norwegian company Kolos is set to build World's largest data centre in Arctic Norway, powered by 100% sustainable energy.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The State Bank of India (SBI) accounts for over 27% of the total amount owed to public sector banks by wilful defaulters, with 1,762 such defaulters owing as much as ₹25,104 crore to it as on March 31.
- Punjab National Bank (PNB) was next on the list with 1,120 wilful defaulters owing ₹12,278 crore.
- India has imposed anti-dumping duty on Chinese tempered glass, used for protecting mobile phone screens.
- The duty, aims at protecting the domestic industry from cheaper imports.
New Appointments
- O Panneerselvam today took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, hours after the merger of rival AIADMK factions was announced.
- Mr. Selvam was also allotted the Finance Ministry, a portfolio which was held by D Jeyakumar until now.
- Panneerselvam's close aide K Pandiarajan was sworn-in as Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture.
Sports Current Affairs
- Shapath Bharadwaj, a 15-year-old from Meerut, won a Bronze medal in the double trap event at the ISSF Junior Shotgun World Cup in Italy.
- Qatar is going to build a stadium shaped like an Arabian cap for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
- The FIFA Under-17 World Cup official winner's trophy was recently displayed at the India Gate.
- The event will be India's first official FIFA tournament.
- Note : The tournament's winner will lift the trophy on October 28.
- World Badminton Championships, also known as 2017 BWF World Championships, began today.
- This tournament will be held from today (21st August 2017) to 27th August 2017 at Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Scotland.
Careers
- The JEE Advanced exam will be conducted completely online from 2018 to make logistics and evaluations easier.
- To facilitate a smooth transition, students will be given training for three days where they can take online mock tests and operate the system.
