- Today (20th August) is World Mosquito Day
- This day was first established in 1897, when the link between mosquitos and malaria transmission was discovered by Sir Ronald Ross.
- To settle internet related disputes in Hangzhou (capital of Chinese e-commerce), China today launched its 1st digital "cyber-court".
- In cyber court, a lawsuit can be filed in five minutes, saving time and reducing costs.
- Defendants and plaintiffs will appear before the judge not in person, but via video-chat.
- Venezuela's Constituent Assembly, which was recently created by President Nicolás Maduro in defiance of international criticism, has given itself the power to pass laws.
National Current Affairs
- The Government has directed all state and union territories to formulate a specialised unit for VIP security.
- This move is aimed at assuring protection for all dignitaries including the Prime Minister and the President when they visit states.
- The centre has also directed the states to ensure adequate manpower and infrastructural support in these units.
- The Telangana government today launched an exclusive 24x7 helpline '181' for women.
- Apart from contacting police, the helpline can also be used to seek medical help, ambulance and other emergency services.
- To prevent swine flu cases in the state, the Punjab government today launched a state-wide awareness campaign.

- Udaipur's Kalpit Veerwal, the first-ever student to have scored 100% in the IIT-JEE Mains, has been included in the Limca Book of Records for his achievement.
- The 17-year-old, who topped with 360/360, is now studying Computer Science at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
- He has also topped the Indian Junior Science Olympiad and National Talent Search Examination in the past.

- Rahul Doshi, a 12-year-old Indian-origin boy has been crowned as the UK's 'Child Genius' in a popular television quiz competition.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The government extended the deadline for filing returns and payment of taxes under GST for the month of July by 5 days, to August 25.
- The extension came after GSTN portal faced technical issues because of a huge rush.
- Note : The last date for filing returns for taxpayers who have to claim credit for past taxes will be August 28.
- The State Bank of India (SBI) has realised ₹235.06 crore as penalty from 3.88 crore accounts for not maintaining monthly average balance in the first quarter.

- ‘I am HIV positive, so what ?’, a book on the career of Manipur’s highly-acclaimed bodybuilder, K Pradipkumar Singh, known for his personal struggle against HIV AIDS, was released today.
- This book was written by : Jayanta Kalita
- Pradipkumar, who was diagnosed as HIV positive in 2000, had come out publicly about his condition in 2007, soon after winning the Mr. Manipur title.
- Note : He won the Mr South Asia title and bagged a bronze in the Mr World contest in 2012.
Sports Current Affairs
- 29th World University Games (also known as 2017 Summer Universiade) began in Taipei city of Taiwan.
- Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen officially opened ceremony.
- These games will take place from 19 August to 30 August 2017.
