International Current Affairs
  • Today is Independence Day of Indonesia
    • On August 17, 1945, Indonesia declared its independence from Netherlands.
    • About Indonesia

      • Currency : Indonesian rupiah
  • Today is Independence Day of Gabon (Gabonese Republic)
    • Gabon, is a country on the west coast of Central Africa that had been under French rule till August 17, 1960.

  • The border line separating India and Pakistan, known as the Radcliffe Line, was finalized on this day (17th August 2017), two days after the Independence, in the year 1947. 
    • The line, 3,323 kilometres long, was drawn by British lawyer Sir Cyril Radcliffe. 
    • The border has five crossing points, four in Punjab and one in Rajasthan.
  • The US State Department has designated militant group Hizbul Mujahideen as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The United States and China have signed an agreement to improve communication between the militaries of the two countries and reduce the "risk of miscalculation". 
  • Indian Government has inked US $24.64 million Grant Agreement from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) of the World Bank for Ecosystem Service Improvement Project.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Sweden on cooperation in the field of Intellectual Property (IPRs).
    • The MoU establishes wide ranging and flexible mechanism, allowing both countries to work together and exchange best practices on training programs and technical exchanges to raise awareness and protect IPRs.
National Current Affairs
  • To avert terror attacks like 26/11 in the future, the central government has approved a ₹31,748 crore "definitive five-year action programme" for the Coast Guard.
    • The plan aims to make the Coast Guard a 175-ship and 110-aircraft force by 2022. Notably, India has a coastline of 7,516 km, with 1,382 islands.
  • PM Narendra Modi today met the 1st all-woman Indian navy crew preparing to sail around the world
    • The 6-member crew will sail on the 55-foot sailing vessel Tarini, inducted into the Navy earlier this year. 
    • The crew will begin its voyage from Goa this month and is expected to return in March 2018.
  • The government is going to get 1,000 Four-door Electric Vehicles (EV) for Central ministers and senior bureaucrats by November. 
    • The cars can run 120-150 km on a single charge.
  • To reduce air and noise pollution, the Maharashtra state government is going to register battery-powered vehicles as cabs and e-taxis
  • Activist Irom Sharmila married her longtime partner, British citizen Desmond Coutinha, in Tamil Nadu's Kodaikanal in the presence of several friends.  
    • Note : The 45-year-old 'Iron Lady of Manipur' ended a 16-year-long fast in 2016, contested and lost Manipur Assembly polls this year.
  • According to the census report, released by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) the Population Estimation of Asian elephant in India is around 27,312.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved creation of a Single corpus fund non-lapsable known as Madhyamik and Uchchtar Shiksha Kosh (MUSK).
    • Under this fund, all proceeds of secondary and higher education cess will be credited and utilised for the government’s schemes in education sector.

  • Sohail Mahmood today took over as Pakistan's new High Commissioner to India.
    • He is going to replace Abdul Basit. 
  • Cab hailing startup Ola today hired former executive of eKart, Harish Abhichandani as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
    • He is going to replace Rajiv Bansal.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Japan, the world's third largest economy, expanded at an annualised rate of 4% in the April-June quarter, making it the Fastest growing economy among the G7 nations

  • India's Lakshya Sen, who is currently the world number one junior shuttler, won the Bulgaria Open International Series title a day after turning 16 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

  • The 21-member Indian contingent captured a record haul of 37 Medals (15 Gold, 10 Silver and 12 Bronze) at the recently concluded 7th World Dwarf Games in Canada.
