  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Forge - to develop a successful relationship, especially in business or politics, with another country, organization, or person
  • Self-interest - interest in yourself and how to gain advantages for yourself, often without considering other people
  • Long-term - continuing to exist, be relevant, or have an effect for a long time in the future
  • Togetherness - a feeling of friendship and happiness in a close relationship
  • Strategising - to think of a detailed plan for achieving success in situations such as war, politics, business, industry, or sport
  • Disentangle - to separate things that have become joined
  • Embrace - to put your arms around someone in order to show love or friendship
  • Beneficiary - someone who gets an advantage from a situation
  • Adamant - determined not to change your belief or decision about something
  • Gamble -  to do something that involves risks but may result in benefits if things happen as you hope they will
  • Pay off    - if something that you do pays off, it brings you some benefit
  • Distinct - separate and different in a way that is clear
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Ditch - to get rid of something or someone that is no longer wanted
  • Miserable - extremely unhappy or uncomfortable
  • Yielding -  producing something
  • Substantial - large in amount or degree
  • Appetite - a feeling of being very interested in something or of wanting it very much
  • Foe - an enemy
  • Manoeuvre - a clever or dishonest action that you do to get something that you want
  • Enhance - to improve something, or to make it more attractive or more valuable
  • Once bitten twice shy - used for saying that someone will be careful about doing something again, or will be unwilling to do it again because they failed or were hurt the first time they did it
  • Revive - to make someone become conscious or alive again
  • Crutch - someone or something that you depend on for support or help, especially too much
  • Oblige - to force someone to do something because it is the law, a rule, or a duty
  • Axing - to order someone suddenly to give up a job
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation

  • Influenza - a common infectious illness that causes fever and headache
  • Immunisation - to prevent someone from getting a particular illness by putting a substance into their body
  • Mortality - the number of deaths within a particular area, group etc
  • Respectively - used for saying that something happens separately to each of the people or things mentioned in the order in which they were mentioned
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar
  • Surveillance - the process of carefully watching a person or place that may be involved in a criminal activity
  • Spike - a sudden increase
  • Incidence - the number of cases of an illness or a medical condition in a particular place, group, or situation
  • Death toll - the number of people who are killed on a particular occasion
  • Swine flu - a disease similar to flu that spreads quickly from one person to another and causes problems such as a sore throat and cough, related to a virus which infects pigs
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Genome - the total amount of genetic information in the chromosomes of a living thing, including its genes and DNA
  • Sequencing - the process of arranging things in a particular order
  • Virology - the treatment and study of illnesses caused by viruses
  • Undergone - to experience something, especially something that is unpleasant but necessary
  • Significant - very important
  • Mutation - a change in the genes of a plant or animal that causes it to become different from others of its type
  • Virulent - a virulent illness is very dangerous, and affects people very quickly
  • Correlation - a connection or relationship between two or more things that is not caused by chance
  • Virulence - the danger and speed of spreading of a disease
  • Whatsoever - used for emphasizing a negative statement

  • Pandemic - a disease that affects almost everyone in a very large area
  • Strain - pressure caused by a difficult situation
  • Susceptible - easily influenced or affected by something
  • Diagnosis - a statement about what disease someone has, based on examining them
  • Mortality - the number of deaths within a particular area, group etc
  • Potentially - possibly true in the future, but not true now
  • Resistance - the ability not to be affected or harmed by something, especially a disease or a drug
  • Compelling - interesting or exciting enough to keep your attention completely
  • Pharmacy - a shop where medicines are prepared and sold
  • Prescription - a piece of paper that a doctor gives you that says what type of medicine you need
  • Qualitative - concerning the quality of something
  • Quantitative - involving amounts, or involving measuring things as amounts
  • Vulnerable - easy to attack
  • Meanwhile - at the same time
  • Come in contact with - to be in a place where you meet someone or experience something
