International Current Affairs
- China and Russia held their First Joint Naval Drill in the Baltic Sea.
- This exercise involves anti-aircraft and anti-ship defence measures coordinated from the Baltiysk base in Russia's Kaliningrad enclave.
- Zimbabwe's Parliament today passed a bill giving President Robert Mugabe power to appoint the country's top judges without consulting anyone.
- Note : The bill is the first amendment to the Constitution since it was adopted by a referendum in 2013.
- Today is the Death Anniversary of 11th President of India, Bharat Ratna Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (A. P. J. Abdul Kalam)
- He is known as the 'Missile Man of India' for his work on the development of ballistic missile.
- He passed away on 27th July 2015, while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong.
- PM Narendra Modi inaugurated a Memorial built in Kalam's honour at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
Science & Technology
- India's first bullet train project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail, will be inaugurated this September by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.
- Important Points to Note :
- A Loan agreement of over ₹76,900 crore is expected to be signed between the two nations during Abe's India visit.
- Japan's Shinkansen technology will be used in construction of the line.
- Facebook TV is set to launch online in mid-August.
- The social media giant has partnered with media companies like Group Nine Media, BuzzFeed, ATTN, and Vox Media which would provide inexpensive, five to 10-minute shows.
- Mumbai Metro One today announced plans to launch India's first mobile ticketing system by mid-August for easy commute.
- Commuters will be able to buy tickets using the Mumbai Metro app, which will generate a QR code that can be used to get access through automated fare collection gates.
- China is going to to build its first Mars simulation base on the country's Tibetan plateau as it aims to send the first mission to the red planet by 2020 after the US, India and Russia.
New Appointments
- India's third largest private lender Axis Bank has re-appointed Shikha Sharma as Managing Director and CEO for a term of 3 years starting June 2018.
- Note : Sharma took charge as Axis Bank's CEO in 2009.
- Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar today (for the Sixth time), a day after resigning from the post due to a rift in the Congress-RJD-JD(U) alliance.
- He has two days to prove his majority.
- BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi today took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.
- Virender Sehwag and P T Usha named in 12-member Committee which has been handed the job to pick this year's Khel Ratna and ArjunaAwardees.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- Snapdeal-owned recharge app FreeCharge was today acquired by private lender Axis Bank in a $60 million deal.
- PM Narendra Modi-led cabinet today cleared the New Wage Code Bill which will ensure minimum wage to 4 crore employees across all sectors.
- The new minimum wage norms would be applicable irrespective of the pay whereas it's presently applicable to workers getting up to ₹18,000 monthly.
- The UK will ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 as part of the government's efforts to tackle air pollution by making "almost every car" zero-emission by 2050.
- The government will allocate £200 million to local authorities for schemes to restrict diesel vehicles' access to polluted roads.
- Australia has sent its first uranium shipment to India for testing purposes ahead of possible commercial sales.
- Important Points to Note :
- This comes after India and Australia signed an agreement for civil nuclear cooperation in 2014 to meet India's growing energy needs.
- This is a first of its kind agreement as India is not a party to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
