Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Continental ties - India's outreach to Africa"

  • Continental - relating to or belonging to any of the Earth’s continents
  • Outreach - the practice of providing help and advice to people in a community before they have to ask for it
  • Heavy-lifting - difficult work that needs a lot of effort
  • Transform - to make someone or something completely different
  • Strategic - carefully planned in order to achieve a particular goal
  • Forum - an organized event or meeting at which people discuss something
  • Minimal - extremely small in amount or degree
  • Token - token actions are done to show that you are doing something, even if the results are limited in their effect
  • Foothold - a position from which you can improve your status or become more successful
  • Generic - a generic drug or other product does not have a trademark and is sold without a company’s name on it
  • Dependable - if someone or something is dependable, you can have confidence in him, her, or it
  • Donor - someone who gives things such as money or goods to an organization, especially one that helps people
  • Aid - money, food, or other help that an organization or government gives to a country or area where people need it, for example because of a war or flood
  • Strings attached - if something such as an agreement has strings attached, it involves special demands or limits
  • Summit - a meeting or series of meetings between leaders of two or more countries
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Credentials - personal qualities, achievements, or experiences that make someone suitable for something
  • To begin with -  used for introducing the first thing in a list of things you are going to say
  • Maritime - involving ships or the business of moving people and goods in ships
  • Alliance -  an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • On the sidelines of something - not actively involved in something
  • Delegation -  a group of people who represent a country, government, or organization
  • Peacekeeping - military efforts to prevent war, especially between groups who have been fighting
  • Consultation - discussion between people or groups before they make a decision
  • Colonial - relating to a system or period in which one country rules another
  • Initiative - an important action that is intended to solve a problem
  • Bolstering - to make something stronger or more effective
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different groups who agree to work together to achieve a shared aim
  • Like-minded - like-minded people, groups etc have similar tastes, interests, and opinions
  • Equitable - fair and reasonable because everyone is treated in the same way
  • Transparent - open and honest, without secrets

  • Revival - the process of becoming active, successful, or popular again
  • Reputation - the opinion that people have about how good or how bad someone or something is
  • Consecutive - following one after another in order and with nothing else in between
  • Aviation - connected with making or flying planes
  • Carrier - a vehicle or ship used for moving goods or people
  • The likes of - a person, thing, or group similar in character or quality to the one mentioned
  • Corporate - relating to large companies
  • Beset - to cause someone difficulty or danger over a period of time
  • Bear fruit - to have a successful result
  • Sustainable - capable of continuing for a long time at the same level
  • Owing to - because of something
  • A slew of something - a large number of things
  • Bloated - not effective because it is too large or has too many workers
  • Workforce - the total number of people who work in a particular company, industry, or area
  • Adequately - enough or satisfactory for a particular purpose
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
  • Subservient - considered less important than something else
  • Holding the short end of the stick - to suffer the bad effects of a situation
  • Consortium - a group of companies or people with similar interests or aims who have agreed to work together
  • Bailout - money that someone gives or lends to a person or organization with financial problems
  • Bureaucratic - involving a lot of complicated rules, details, and processes
  • Mismanagement - the process of managing something badly
  • Sinful - morally wrong or bad
  • Fill vacuum - replace something
  • Come forward - to offer help
  • Either way - used for saying that it does not matter which of two things happens or is true, because the result will be the same
  • Incur -  to lose money, owe money, or have to pay money as a result of doing something
