Hello everyone, in our Lesson 65, we learnt about the prefixes Sub, Suc, Suf, Sug, Sum, Sup and  Sur.  They represent the meanings under; from belowToday we shall see the prefixes Super, Sur. Happy Reading :)

  • Super, Sur - over; extremely
Let's try to understand this with some examples
  • supervise (verb) = to oversee
    • super - Prefix = over
    • vise (videre) - Root = to see
  • surround (verb) = to go around on all sides
    • sur - Prefix = over
    • round (undare) - Root = round; to flow
  • surplus (noun) = over plus; excess
    • sur - Prefix = in addition
    • plus - Root = more
Let's have a look at some more words with prefixes, for better understanding.
  • Super Bowl - football game ‘over’ all others
  • Superfine - of an exceptional quality
  • Superintendent - administrator ‘over’ an entire school system
  • Superlative - of carrying ‘over’ and ‘above’
  • Superman - man ‘over’ all others
  • Superstar - star ‘over’ all other sports or music stars
  • Supervisor - one who watches ‘over’ others
  • Surcharge - charge which is ‘over’ and ‘above’ a stated fee
  • Surface - layer lying ‘over’ something
  • Surfeit - an amount that is too large
  • Surname - name ‘over’ all in a family
  • Surpass - to pass ‘over’ others
  • Surround - a wave ‘over’ something that engulfs it
  • Survey - look ‘over’ something
  • Survival - continuing to live
