International Current Affairs
  • Today (25th March) is International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and Transatlantic Slave Trade.
    • This day aims to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice in today's world.
    • Theme for the year 2017 : "Remember Slavery: Recognising the Legacy and Contributions of People of African Descent"
  • The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) is observing the 10th anniversary of 'Earth Hour' today. 
    • The worldwide event is held annually encouraging individuals to turn off non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 PM local time as a symbol of their commitment to the planet. 
    • Note : Earth Hour was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007.
  • Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today announced that India is going to seal international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh soon. 
    • This could be India's major step against terrorism and the problem of refugees. 
    • The border with Pakistan would be sealed by 2018, he added.

National Current Affairs
  • The 5th edition of ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav (RSM) – 2017’ was held in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. 
    • It was organized by the Union Ministry of Culture to preserve, promote and popularize the heritage and cultural diversity of Indian culture and reconnect the new generation with Indian culture.
  • The 3rd edition of International Conference on Alternate Fuels and Raw Materials in Cement Industry -Towards Realising Swachh Bharat Dream” was held New Delhi. 
    • It was organized by the Cement Manufacturer’s Association India (CMA). 
    • The 2-day conference aimed to facilitate technical, financial and regulatory solutions for increasing alternate fuels and raw materials usage in the cement industry.
  • The newly elected BJP-led Manipur government has announced to end the stage of interview in direct recruitment for junior level posts in all departments under the state government with immediate effect. 
    • The state also decided to amend the existing recruitment rules for Grade III and IV posts accordingly.
  • The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to relieve teachers from being a part of election duties to ensure that the education system doesn't suffer.
    • The state will go for bypolls next month for the parliament seats in Srinagar and Anantnag.
  • Burhanpur district near Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal is using emojis as indicators to tackle the problem of nourishment among children up to six years of age. 
    • They paint a green smiling emoji for a healthy baby, a flat yellow face for an unhealthy or malnourished child and a red sad emoji for a severely malnourished baby on every home's wall.
  • The Centre has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar cards with all mobile connections, both new and old, by February 2018. 
    • Aadhaar will now be mandatory for getting new SIM cards and service providers have been directed to reverify existing customers using their Aadhaar numbers and biometric details. 
    • This comes after a Supreme Court directive to verify all mobile numbers.

Business & Economic Affairs
  • State Bank of India (SBI) Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya has been ranked 26th among the world's 50 greatest leaders, according to Fortune. 
    • With this, Bhattacharya has become the only Indian corporate leader to be featured on the list. 
    • Note : Bhattacharya is the first-ever woman to helm SBI, which is India's largest lender.
  • Bajaj Auto today announced that it has agreed with Japan’s Kawasaki to end their eight-year old alliance for sales and services in India from April 2017. 
    • However, Bajaj and Kawasaki will continue to maintain their cooperative relationship across the rest of the world.
    • Bajaj has had an alliance with Kawasaki for the latter's motorcycles through its Probiking network since 2009.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today directed all Public Sector Banks and some private banks to remain open on all days (including Saturday, Sunday and holidays) from 25th March 2017 to April 1 to facilitate government receipt and payment functions. 
    • "The concerned departments of the Reserve Bank undertaking government business will also remain open on the above days," the RBI stated.
  • Major Income Tax changes applicable from 1st April 2017
    • The government in its budget has halved the rate of taxation to 5% for taxpayers between income of ₹2.5 lakh-₹5 lakh, applicable from the fiscal starting April 1, 2017.
    • Further, a one-page tax return form will be introduced for individuals with income up to ₹5 lakh. 
    • The government will also impose up to ₹10,000 penalty for delayed I-T return filing.
  • The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is axing 158 branches, most of them NatWest outlets, with the loss of up to 362 jobs. 
    • The group blamed the move on customers turning away from traditional counter service to do banking on the internet and mobile phones. 
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) today banned Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) from accessing the equity derivatives market for a year, and directed the company to disgorge the profits made by violating the rules on unfair trade practices when it sold a stake in its erstwhile unit Reliance Petroleum Ltd (RPL).
  • India’s largest private sector lender ICICI Bank has launched a new app titled Mera iMobile app
    • The multi-lingual app allows electronic transfer of funds through multiple payment mechanisms.  
    • This is India’s first one stop banking app for a range of digital services for rural customers.

Awards & Honors
  • The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I & B) has bestowed Life Time Achievement (LTA) award upon veteran photojournalist Raghu Rai for his remarkable contribution to the field. 
    • He was presented award at 6th National Photography Awards (NPA) 2017. 
    • Rai is known for his books, Raghu Rai’s India: Reflections in Colour and Reflections in Black and White. 
  • Ravish Kumar, Senior executive editor of NDTV India, was honored with inaugural Kuldip Nayar journalism award in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the world of Journalism. 
    • The award was set up to honour those working in vernacular media. 
    • It will be awarded every year from now on and carries a plaque along with a cash amount of Rs 1 lakh.

MOUs & Agreements
  • Assam Government has signed MoU with State Bank of India (SBI) to provide Housing and Educational Loan at subsidised interest rates to the employees of the state government. 
    • As per the MoU, state government will provide interest subsidy at the rate of 3.50% for housing loan and education loan at 4%. 

Science & Technology
  • Three naval systems, developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), was today handed over to the navy by Defence Minister Arun Jaitley. 
    • The naval systems, given to Indian Navy, are USHUS-II submarine sonar, Directing gear for hull-mounted sonar array, and Inertial navigation system for ship applications

General Knowledge
  • When India became independent in August 1947, ₹1 was divided into 64 paise or 16 annas, with each anna being equal to 4 paisa. 
    • Under the Indian Coinage Act 'naya paisa' (new paisa) was introduced in 1957, with the rupee comprising 100 naya paise instead of 64 old paise. 
    • The rupee, however, remained unchanged in value and nomenclature.

New Appointments
  • Senior IAS officer Upendra Tripathy was appointed as the full-time Interim Director General (IDG) of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).  
    • ISA is a coalition of the solar resource rich countries. 
  • Ankur Khanna has been appointed as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of International Cricket Council (ICC).
  • Madhabi Puri Buch was appointed as the new Whole-Time Member (WTM) of the market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)  for the tenure of 3 years. 
    • She is founder-director of Agora Advisory Pvt Ltd. 
    • This is the first time that a women and a person from private sector has been chosen for a key post of SEBU. 

Sports Current Affairs
  • India's para athletes won 13 medals in the season opening 9th Fazza International IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai. 
    • Out of the 13 medals, Five were gold, Three of which were won by Sundar Singh Gurjar. 
  • The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala has become India's 27th Test venue, hosting the final Test between India and Australia starting today. 
    • The stadium hosted its first international match in 2013, an India-England ODI. 
    • Since then, the stadium has hosted ten more international games, including eight T20Is, with India winning two ODIs at the venue.
