English Vocabulary in 365 Days - Lesson 65

Hello everyone, in our Lesson 64, we learnt about the prefixes Semi, Hemi and Demi.  They represent the meanings half; partialToday we shall see the prefixes Sub, Suc, Suf, Sug, Sum, Sup, Sur and Sus. Happy Reading :)

Day 65 : Sub, Suc, Suf, Sug, Sum, Sup, Sur, Sus

  • Sub, Suc, Suf, Sug, Sum, Sup, Sur - under; from below
Let's try to understand this with some examples
  • subject (noun) = the thing which is being discussed, considered or studied
    • sub - Prefix = under
    • ject (jacere) - Root = throw
  • success (noun) = the achieving of the results wanted or hoped for
    • suc (sub) - Prefix = close to 
    • cess (cedere) - Root = go
Let's have a look at some more words with prefixes, for better understanding.
  • Subconscious - under the conscious level of the mind
  • Submarine - vehicle which goes ‘under’ the sea.
  • Submersible - a submersible machine or vehicle can work under water
  • Subpar - of a performance that is ‘under’ what it should be
  • Subscribe - to ’under’write a magazine
  • Subterranean - pertaining to ‘under’ the ground
  • Subway - ’under’ground transportation
  • Succeed - to achieve something that you planned to do or attempted to do
  • Succor - a running ‘under’
  • Suffer - a carrying ‘under’
  • sufficient - a doing ‘under’
  • Suffix - morpheme fastened ‘under’ a word
  • Suggest - a carrying ‘under’
  • Suggest - to offer an idea or a plan for someone to consider
  • Support - a carrying ‘under’
  • Surreal - ‘under’ reality
  • Surreal - a situation or experience that is surreal is so strange, so abnormal, or so disturbing that it seems like something from a dream
  • Surrender - to stop fighting and admit defeat
  • Surreptitious - a surreptitious deed is done secretly to avoid bringing any attention to it
  • Surrogate - someone who temporarily takes the place of another person, acting as a representative usually because that person is not available or cannot carry out the task.
  • Suspect - not as expected
  • Suspend - hang freely
  • Suspenseful - (of a situation) characterized by or causing suspense
  • Suspicious - openly distrustful and unwilling to confide
  • Sustain - lengthen or extend in duration or space

    Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.

    a. write
