International Current Affairs
  • Donald J. Trump is going to be sworn-in as 45th President of United States today. 
    • Chief Justice of Supreme Court John Roberts will administer him the oath of office using Trump family bible & one known as the Lincoln Bible.
    • Note : Indian Ambassador to the US, Navtej Sarna will represent India at the Presidential Inauguration today.
National Current Affairs
  • Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra Singh today declared Dharamshala as the 2nd capital of the state
    • The Himachal government is expected to make Dharamshala its winter capital and shift the government to Dharamshala for two months in winter.
    • Important Points to Note
      • This move makes Himachal Pradesh the third Indian state to have more than one capital
      • While Maharashtra has Mumbai and Nagpur as its capitals, Srinagar and Jammu are the respective summer and winter capitals of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje inaugurated the 10th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival today at Diggi Palace. 
    • Lyricist and poet Gulzar gave the keynote address along with American poet Anne Waldman.
  • Political activist Irom Sharmila's political party Peoples' Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA), which was launched in October last year, is Manipur's first crowd-funded party
MOUs & Agreements
  • Ministry of AYUSH and Advertising Standards Council of India -ASCI today signed a MoU to co-regulate misleading advertisements in the AYUSH sector.
Science & Technology
  • Israel's ballistic missile shield, Arrow 3, has become operational in a 'Star Wars'-like extension of the country's capabilities allowing it to shoot down incoming missiles above the atmosphere. 
    • Arrow serves as the top tier of an integrated Israeli shield, the bottom tier of which is the 'Iron Dome' interceptor which Israel used in the 2014 Gaza war against Palestinian militants.
Business & Economic Affairs
  • The World Bank has sanctioned ₹1,376 crore for the complete upgradation and improvement of the power system network in Tripura.
    • The project has been divided into five phases and SPML Infra Ltd has bagged the contract for the first phase. The first phase would cost around ₹461 crore.
New Appointments
  • The Centre today appointed Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma as the new CBI Director
    • The post of CBI director was lying vacant for over one month following Anil Sinha’s retirement on December 2.
  • All India Football Federation President, Praful Patel was appointed as a member of the FIFA Finance Committee (2017-2021)
    • Patel was also appointed as the Senior Vice-President of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in December 2016. 
    • Note : The FIFA Finance Committee monitors the financial management and advises the FIFA Executive Committee on financial matters and asset management.
Awards & Honors
  • Ex-India captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Sourav Ganguly will have a stand named after him at Kolkata's Eden Gardens stadium
    • Note : A stand will also be named after late BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya.
  • UAE crown prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will be the Chief Guest at Republic Day function this year.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India defeated England by 15 runs in the 2nd ODI at Cuttack, thereby taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and winning their fourth consecutive ODI series against England. 
  • Jayesh Raimalani, a young Indian footballer, has joined Barcelona-based football team 'Club Esportiu Jupiter', which plays in the fourth division of Spanish football. 
  • Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba today became the major sponsor of Olympic Games, after signing a deal with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that runs until 2028. 
    • Note : Alibaba will be the official e-commerce and cloud services partner of Olympic Games until 2028, and it joins 12 other companies including Coca-Cola and McDonald's as the top Olympic sponsors.
  • The Indian Sports Ministry has decided to postpone the Archery Asia Cup, following the Archery Association of India's delay in accepting the Sports Code. 
    • The championship was scheduled to begin in Delhi later this month and had received entries from five countries.
    • The ministry denied the association a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for not implementing the code.
