International Current Affairs
  • Today (10th December) is Human Rights Day.
    • This day is observed annually on December 10, to honour the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in the year 1948. 
    • This year, Human Rights Day "calls on everyone to stand up for someone's rights" and defend the rights of anyone at the risk of discrimination including a refugee, a migrant or an LGBT person.

  • Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has set up a 25-member panel to propose amendments to the Constitution to move to a federal form of government.
  • The US House of Representatives today passed a bill to give more protection to whistleblowers at the FBI
    • The bill would protect whistleblowers from retaliation by supervisors. 
    • The move follows a Government Accountability Report recommendation in May 2015, which found that complaints made by whistleblowers in the fiscal year 2013 took an average of 526 days to resolve.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and Vietnam have signed a civil nuclear cooperation agreement for the peaceful use of atomic energy.
    • Note : Three other agreements to enhance aviation links, jointly work in the area of energy efficiency, and to promote parliamentary cooperation were also signed.
National Current Affairs
  • Students will no longer have to submit original certificates to universities for admission for the upcoming academic year, a notification issued by University Grants Commission (UGC) announced today. 
    • It also stated that institutes will have to give a full refund if admission is cancelled within 15 days. 
    • The notification covers all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes run by UGC-recognised universities.
  • The 21st International Film Festival of Kerala began today in Thiruvananthapuram. 
    • It opened with Navid Mahmoudi's directorial 'Raftan,' which narrates the story of a couple attempting to migrate from Iran to Europe. 
    • The eight-day festival, hosted by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy on behalf of the Kerala Cultural Affairs Department, is set to showcase 184 films from 62 countries.
  • To encourage digital transactions, the Haryana government today announced that all colleges and universities in the state would be made cashless
    • An action plan has been prepared to bring the teaching and non-teaching staff under the cashless payment system, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma announced. 
    • Payment of fees and withdrawal of scholarships will also be made cashless, he added.
  • Hearing a case against Delhi University's photocopy services filed by international publishers, the Delhi High Court has ruled that photocopying of copyrighted material for educational use is allowed under the Indian Copyright law
    • It added that there could be no restriction on how much of the book is copied as long as demands of the course being taught justified it.
  • The Indian Railways has unveiled the new Humsafar Express, an all AC-3 tier train.
    • This train was one of the promises made by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu under the Railway Budget 2016. 
    • Apart from GPS-based passenger information system, the 22-coach train features facilities like CCTVs and braille-integrated displays. 
    • All coaches have bio-toilets and are equipped with smoke detection alarms.
  • The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched a TV channel named ‘DigiShala’ to promote cashless transactions. 
    • The channel was launched as part of the ‘Digidhan’ campaign which aims to spread awareness about digital transactions.
Recent Committees in News
  • The 11 member Committee on Digital Payments has today submitted its final report to the Union Finance Ministry. 
    • This committee was notified on 23rd August 2016 by the Finance Ministry. 
    • It was tasked to review existing payment systems in the country and recommend appropriate measures for encouraging Digital Payments.

Banking & Economic Affairs
  • Black civil rights leader Viola Desmond will be the first Canadian woman to be featured on a banknote, the Canada government announced today. 
    • The Canadian $10 note will be circulated in 2018.
    • Note : In one of Canada's most publicised racial discrimination cases, Desmond been tried for tax violation after she refused to leave a whites-only area at a theatre.
Awards & Honors
  • Indian filmmaker Onir's documentary, 'Raising The Bar' has won the 'Award of Recognition' at the 'Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards'. 
    • The documentary is about six Indian and Australian youth with Down Syndrome
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has been listed among 100 leading global thinkers of 2016 by the Foreign Policy magazine.
    • Swaraj's name has been included "for fashioning a novel brand of Twitter diplomacy". 
    • She shares the honour with Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.
Deaths
  • The world's oldest person to venture into space and first American to orbit the Earth, John Glenn passed away today.
    • Glenn spent almost nine days on the space shuttle orbiter Discovery aged 77 in 1998. 
    • As a Marine Corps Major, John Glenn set a record for the first transcontinental flight to average supersonic speed.
Science & Technology
  • Japan today launched a spaceship carrying a 700-metre-long tether to pull some of the space debris from Earth's orbit out into the atmosphere, where it will burn. 
    • The tether was made by a 106-year-old fishing net company using aluminium and steel. 
    • There are more than 100 million space debris pieces in orbit, moving at 28,000 kmph around the Earth.
New Appointments
  • US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated an Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, as his top diplomat in China.
  • James Quincey is going to be the new CEO of Coca-Cola.
    • The current CEO Muhtar Kent has announced that he will step down as the CEO of Coca-Cola in May 2017.
