International Current Affairs
  • Indians will not be eligible for visa-free entry to Hong Kong beginning January 23, with the Hong Kong Immigration Department implementing a 'Pre-arrival Registration for Indian Nationals'. 
    • The Immigration Department said India is a "testing point" as many asylum-seekers come from the country. 
    • Note : This is the first time Hong Kong has implemented such a restriction for any country.
  • Dubai is going to build Al Maktoum International airport, a second airport in the south of the city, which will become the world's largest airport on completion. 
    • It will spread across 35,000 acres and be able to accommodate about 220 million passengers annually. 
    • This will be completed in an estimated period of 12 years.
  • India ranked 4th in the Global Wind Power Installed Capacity index with cumulative installed wind power generation capacity of 25,088 MW in 2015. 
    • The index was released as part Global Wind Report: Annual Market, flagship publication of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
    • This list was topped by China followed by USA and Germany.

Banking & Economic Affairs
  • Today is 104th foundation day of India's first SWADESHI BANK 'Central Bank of India".
    • Central Bank of India was completely owned and founded by Indians with out any Britishers share.
    • It was established on 21 December 1911 by Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala with Sir Pherozeshah Mehta as Chairman.
    • Sorabji Pochkhanawala is the only banker in who's honour postage stamp was released by the President of India.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today withdrew the restrictions imposed on deposits of ₹5,000 and above for KYC (Know Your Customer) compliant accounts
    • This comes two days after RBI announced deposits above ₹5,000 in old banknotes can be made only once till December 30. 
    • Note : KYC is a process by which banks obtain information about the customers' identity and address.
  • Deutsche Bank from January next year will offer all its Male employees in India six months of childcare leave if they happen to be primary caregivers. 
    •  The policy also covers surrogacy and adoption and aligns it with parental leave entitlements.
  • The printing of each new ₹2,000 note costs the Reserve Bank of India ₹3.54, while the ₹500 note costs ₹3.09, an RTI response has said.
    • Note : Bhartiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited, a subsidiary of RBI, prints the new ₹500 and ₹2,000 currency notes at the same price as that of old ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes respectively.
    National Current Affairs
    • The Black Cat commandos of the elite counter-terrorism force National Security Guard will participate in the Republic Day celebrations for the first time in 2017.
      • Till now, NSG's association with the celebrations was limited to sanitising the venue and ensuring security along the parade route. 
      • Note : Special forces only from the Army participated in the parade till now.
    • The Delhi Literature Festival (DLF) is set to take place between February 10 and 12 in Dilli Haat
      • The three-day literary festival will host panel discussions, book launches, book readings, workshops, and theatre and poetry performances, among others. 
      • The festival has been held every year since it began in 2013.
    • Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi today announced the implementation of 3% reservation for differently-abled persons in government jobs in the Union Territory.
    • Union minister for Textiles Smriti Irani launched India's second centre of excellence for sericulture in Bengaluru to boost the silk industry.
      • Note : India's first such centre was set up in Ranchi by the Central Silk Board. 
      • India is currently importing nearly 4,000 metric tonnes of high quality raw silk from China.
    • Armed forces will be able to cast their votes in the upcoming Punjab elections by using electronic postal ballots for the first time in the country, Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer VK Singh today.
    • National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) will be conducted in 8 languages from next academic year.

    • The Haryana government today issued Petro Cards to drivers working with the state government for cashless payments of fuel.
      • Two oil companies, namely Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum have been shortlisted for this purpose.
    New Appointments
    • The Church of England today appointed Woyin Karowei Dorgu, its first black bishop in 20 years. 
      • Dorgu, who was born and brought up in Nigeria, will be the 13th bishop of Woolwich, and will be consecrated on 17 March.
    • England's Queen Elizabeth II is stepping down as the patron of Wimbledon and will be replaced by Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. 
      • The 90-year-old queen has been the patron of Wimbledon since 1952.
    Science & Technology
    • India successfully test-fires nuclear capable cruise missile Nirbhay from Integrated Missile Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha.
      • This test was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). 
      • This is third launch of Nirbhay. 
        • The maiden launch was conducted in March 2013 and second test was conducted in October 2014.
    • The Northern Hemisphere of the planet is today observing the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day and longest night of the year
      • A Solstice is an astronomical event when the tilt of Earth's axis with respect to the Sun is maximum. 
      • This day also marks the longest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere, called the Summer Solstice.
    Sports Current Affairs
    • The International Boxing Association (AIBA) today unanimously voted to induct the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) as one of its permanent members
      • Note : India was provisionally suspended in December 2012 for “possible manipulation” in the erstwhile Indian Amateur Boxing Federation’s elections. 
    • Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja currently occupy the top two spots in the latest ICC bowlers rankings, making it the first time in 42 years of two Indians at the top two positions. 
      • The only other instance of two Indians leading the rankings was in 1974 when Bishan Singh Bedi and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar occupied the first two positions.
    • The Indian team registered 9 wins out of the 12 Tests it played in 2016, making it the most successful year in India's 84-year Test history
      • Important Points to Note
        • India's previous best year was 2010 when it won eight of the 14 Tests it played. 
        • India is also the only Test team to remain unbeaten this year, drawing the remaining three Tests.
