Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Bandwidth for growth"

  • Bandwidth - the range of frequencies used to send information over a distance using phone wires
  • Telecommunications - the science and technology of sending information by telephone, radio, or television
  • Labelled - to use a word or phrase to describe someone or something

  • Call drop - the situation when the telephone calls were cut off before the speaking parties had finished their conversation and before one of them had hung up (due to technical reasons)
  • Auction -  public sale of goods or property, where people make higher and higher bids (offers of money) for each thing, until the thing is sold to the person who will pay most
  • Spectrum - a range of radio waves or light waves
  • Player - a person or organization that influences a situation, especially in business or politics
  • Taker - someone who takes something
  • Prized - considered to be very important or valuable
  • Fork out - to spend money on something, especially when you do not want to
  • Receipts - the amount of money received during a particular period by a business or government
  • Accrue - to increase in number or amount over a period of time
  • Exchequer - the government department that receives and gives out public money, in the UK and some other countries
  • Fiscal - relating to money and financial matters, especially taxes
  • Shortfall - an amount that is less than the level that was expected or needed
  • Pointed out something - to tell someone something
  • Inflows - an amount of something such as money or goods that comes into a place
  • Amnesty - a situation in which a government agrees not to punish people who have committed a particular crime
  • Balance the books - to make sure that the amount of money spent is not more than the amount of money received
  • Indebtedness - the state of owing something (usually money) to someone
  • Telcos - telecommunications companies
  • Pegging - to fasten something
  • Potential -  someone's or something's ability to develop, achieve, or succeed
  • Evinced - to show a particular feeling
  • Suboptimal - not of the highest standard or quality
  • Perspective - a particular way of considering something
  • Stakeholder - a person or company that has invested in a business and owns part of it
  • Integral - necessary and important
  • Demonstrating - to show something clear
  • Tap - to get or make use of something (money)
  • Domestic - local
  • Endless - never finishing
  • Tariffs - a list of the prices charged
  • Deteriorating - to become worse
  • Congestion - a situation in which a place is crowded with people or thigs, so that it is difficult to move around
  • Sheer - completely
  • Marginal - very small in amount or effect
  • Plague  - to cause worry, pain, or difficulty to someone or something over a period of time
  • Bolster - to support or improve something or make it stronger
  • Urban - related to a city or town
  • Ambitious - determined to be successful
  • Bureaucracy - a complicated and annoying system of rules and processes
  • Auditor - someone whose job is to officially examine the financial records of a company, organization, or person to see that they are accurate

  • Constitutional - allowed by the constitution of a country or organization
  • Entrepreneur - someone who uses money to start businesses and make business deals
  • Investor - a person or organization that invests money
  • Pitfall - a problem that is likely to happen in a particular situation
  • Crucial - extremely important
  • Significantly - by a large amount
  • Enhanced - made better, especially by artificial methods
  • Informative - giving a lot of information in a helpful way
  • Variable - something that can change and affect the result of a situation
  • Outcome - the final result of a process
  • Remunerating - to pay or reward someone for their work
  • Notion - knowledge or understanding of something
  • Ex ante - calculated or existing before a particular event
  • Negotiate - to try to reach an agreement by discussing something in a formal way
  • Unforeseen situation - a situation, that you did not expect
  • Colleague - someone who works in the same organization or department as you
  • Cited - mentioned
  • Breakthrough - a discovery or achievement that comes after a lot of hard work
  • Laureate - someone who has won a prize for their achievements, especially a Nobel Prize
  • Liberal - a supporter of the Liberal Party of the UK, Canada, or Australia
  • Conservative - a supporter of the Conservative Party
  • Perhaps - used for saying that you are not certain about something, or that something may or may not be true
