Topic 1 : "No short cuts in Maharashtra"

  • Provocation - an action or statement that is intended to make someone angry
  • Rally - a public meeting that a lot of people go to in order to support someone or something or to protest against someone or something
  • Numerically - involving or expressed in numbers
  • Dominant - more important, powerful, or successful than the other people or things of the same type
  • Accused - a person or group of people who are charged with a crime
  • Protesters - someone who publicly shows their opposition to something such as a law or policy
  • Victim - someone who has been harmed, injured, or killed as the result of a crime
  • Pretext - a pretended reason for doing something that is used to hide the real reason
  • Reiterate - to say something again, once or several times
  • Long-standing - having existed for a long time
  • Scrapping - to decide not to continue with something such as a plan or an event
  • Fuelled -  to make something increase or become worse, especially something unpleasant
  • Anxiety - a worried feeling you have because you think something bad might happen
  • Backwardness - the state of not being developed, modern, or advanced
  • Cross-section - a group that contains an example of all or most types of people or things
  • Inability - the fact of not being able to do something
  • Adequate - good enough or large enough for a particular purpose
  • Sluggish - not performing or reacting as well as usual
  • Agrarian - relating to or involving farming or farmers
  • Agitation - worry and anxiety
  • Affirmative - relating to a statement that shows agreement or says "yes"
  • Determinant - something that controls or decides how something else will develop or what result it will have
  • Key - important
  • Perceived -  to understand or think about something in a particular way
  • Assertion - a statement that you strongly believe is true
  • Sketchy - not detailed or complete
  • Conviction - a decision by a court of law that someone is guilty of a crime
  • Certainly - used for emphasizing that something is definitely true or will definitely happen
  • Spontaneous - happening or done in a natural, often sudden way, without any planning or without being forced
  • Dividend - a share of the profits
  • Well-advised - showing good judgment:
  • Distress - a feeling of extreme worry, sadness, or pain
  • Scrutiny - the careful and detailed examination of something in order to get information about it

Topic 2 : "OPEC’s roll of the dice"

  • OPEC - Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries
  • Roll of the dice - a risky attempt to achieve something
  • Cartel - a group of people or companies who all agree to sell something at the same price so that they can all make profits without competing with one another
  • Barrel - in the oil industry, a barrel of oil is equal to 159 litres
  • Caught someone by surprise - to happen unexpectedly
  • Well-acknowledged - well known or accepted by many people
  • Decisive -  able to make decisions quickly and confidently
  • Staunch - always loyal in supporting a person, organization, or set of beliefs or opinions
  • Crude - oil from rocks underground in a natural state that has not yet been treated
  • Halve -  to reduce something to half its original size, number, or amount
  • Consensus - agreement among all the people involved
  • Disparate - disparate things belong to very different groups or classes
  • Prosperous - rich and successful
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Fractious - easily upset or annoyed
  • Albeit - although
  • Desperate - very serious or bad
  • Tacit - expressed or understood without being said directly
  • Resiliently - showing the quality of being able to return quickly to a previous good condition after problems
  • Acreage - an area of land, often measured in acres
  • Fiscal deficit - a fiscal deficit occurs when a government's total expenditures exceed the revenue that it generates
  • Wage - an amount of money that you earn for working, usually according to how many hours or days you work each week or month
  • Subsidy - an amount of money that the government or another organization pays to help to reduce the cost of a product or service
  • Overseas - happening or existing in a country across the sea from your country
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Exempting - to allow someone to ignore something such as a rule, obligation, or payment
  • Cap - a limit on the amount of money that you can spend or charge
  • Curb - to control or limit something
  • Reviving - to become, or to make something become, active, successful, or popular again
  • Significantly - by a large amount, or in a way that is easily noticeable
  • Hinge - attach or join with
  • Cartel - a group of similar independent companies who join together to control prices and limit competition
  • Lacking - if something important or useful is lacking, it does not exist or is not available
