  • Global Gender Gap Report 2016
    • India's rank improved by 21 spots to 87th out of 144 countries on the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2016.

  • Canada has been named the Best country to visit next year by Lonely Planet in its 'Best in Travel 2017' list.

  • The 4th Edition of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise MITRA SHAKTI 2016’ began at Sinha Regimental Centre in Ambepussa, Sri Lanka
    • The main focus of this edition of joint exercise is to enhance inter-operability while carrying out Counter Terrorism (CT) and Counter Insurgency (CI) operations under the UN Mandate.
  • New Zealand Prime Minister John Key is on a visit to India.
    • The main aim of this visit is to strengthen the relationship with India.

  • Visiting Prime Minister of New Zealand John Key and the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi have signed three agreements today. They are,
    • Avoidance of double taxation
    • Cooperation in the field of youth and sport affair
    • Food safety cooperation

Awards & Honors
  • Paul Beatty (US) has won the 2016 Man Booker prize for his book 'The Sellout', becoming the first American to receive the honour.
  • Bengaluru-based water tanker driver G Balakrishna was crowned Mr Asia 2016 at the fifth Phil-Asia bodybuilding championships in the Philippines. 
  • German tennis player Angelique Kerber was presented with the WTA Year-End World No. 1 award today. 
    • The 28-year-old is the second German to achieve the feat after Steffi Graf who held the year-end number 1 ranking for a record eight times.
  • Actress Priyanka Chopra has been awarded the 'Breakthrough Style Star Award' by American fashion magazine 'InStyle'. 

New Appointments
  • Tata Consultancy Services CEO N Chandrasekaran and Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth joined the Tata Sons board as Additional Directors today.

Business & Economic Affairs
  • According to the World Bank's latest 'Doing Business' report, New Zealand has dethroned Singapore and became the Easiest country in the world to do business.

  • On the occasion of Diwali, online jewellery startup BlueStone has set up ATMs which dispense 24 karat gold coins instead of money in Bengaluru and Delhi. 
    • Users can buy gold coins ranging from 1 gram to 20 grams at market rates using cash or cards. 
  • The Home Ministry has come up with a proposal to raise the salary of the President from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh a month.
    • Furthermore, three times increment in the salary of the Vice President has also been proposed.

General Knowledge
  • Shyam Saran Negi, a resident of Chini tehsil in Himachal Pradesh, was the first voter in independent India's first general elections, and has voted in every general elections since. 
    • Although the majority of the elections took place in 1952, Negi cast his vote on October 25, 1951, as voting was held earlier in Himachal due to the threat of snowfall.

Deaths
  • Kashmiri singer Raj Begum (89) who was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2002, passed away today in Srinagar. 
    • Begum also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2013. 
  • Brazilian soccer Carlos Alberto (72),  captain of 1970 World Cup-winning side passed away.
    • Alberto had scored one of the greatest goals in FIFA World Cup history while captaining Brazil to glory in the 1970 final against Italy in Mexico. 
    • He was a classy defender who played for Fluminense, Santos, Flamengo and the Cosmos and earned the nickname 'The Captain' for his leadership qualities.

Sports Affairs
  • Summer Olympics has been named the second most valuable sports event brand by the Forbes, with a current brand value of $366 million (nearly ₹2,400 crore). 
    • American rugby championship Super Bowl tops the list with a brand value of $630 million (nearly ₹4,200 crore). 
  • Former Jamaican Olympic sprinter Asafa Powell is set to take part in the 2016 edition of the Delhi Half Marathon in November. 
    • The Jamaican, who held the 100-m world record from 2005 to 2008, has broken the 10-second barrier in competitions a record 97 times.
