International Affairs
  • World Mental Health Day is being observed today.
    • The aim of this day is to raise awareness about mental health issues
    • Theme for 2016 : 'Psychological First Aid
    • As per WHO, ‘if we don't act... by 2030 depression will be the leading illness globally.'
National Affairs
  • Aiming to make Madhya Pradesh anaemia-free, the state government has decided to launch a 'Lalima Abhiyan' on November 1.
    • Under the campaign, free iron folic acid tablets will be provided in anganwadis, academic institutions and hospitals
    • According to figures, 52.5% women in the age group of 15-49 years and 25.5% men suffer from anaemia in India.
  • Ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections, Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav today launched the free Samajwadi Smartphone scheme in the state. 
    • Any Uttar Pradesh resident – above 18 years, who has cleared Class X, and is earning less than ₹6 lakh annually, can register for the smartphone. 
    • The distribution of the phones will begin next year after the elections.
  • A textbook named 'Kalipetty' aims to provide an edutainment (education and entertainment) platform that integrates games through learning situations, in primary schools in Kerala. 
    • The textbook, which means 'Playbox', has been developed in a scientific manner and is expected to simplify subjects. 
    • Available to students of classes 1 to 4, the textbook will help them enhance their learning abilities.
  • The Supreme Court in its landmark judgement has widened the scope of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 by making it gender-neutral
    • The SC ordered deletion of the words “adult male” before the word ‘person’ in Section 2(q) of the Act making it gender-neutral. 
    • The remaining part of the legislation would remain operative and was kept untouched. 
    • Note : The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 protects women from physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic abuse at home.

Awards & Honors
  • Oliver Hart of Harvard University and Bengt Holmström of MIT have been awarded the 'Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel' for their contributions to contract theory
    • The theoretical tools created by the duo are valuable to the understanding of real-life contracts and institutions, as well as potential pitfalls in contract design.
  • Indian shooter Jitu Rai has been awarded the 'Champion of Champions' title for pistol shooting in 2016, by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF)
    • The shooter, who had five podium positions and nine top-eight finishes, including two World Cup titles in Bangkok and Maribor, has been awarded the honour for his exceptional performances on the international circuit.
  • Pune's Swayam Shikshan Prayog is one of the 13 winners of the 2016 UNFCCC Momentum for Change Award for its work in Rural Community Women Leaders Combating Climate Change. 
    • The initiative recognises innovative and transformative solutions that address both climate change and wider socio-economic challenges. 
    • Under SSP, rural women are involved as entrepreneurs in propagating clean, green practices.
  • In a first, the ITBP has instituted medals for the canines and horses that accompany troops in combat zones. 
    • An 'Animal Transport' medal would be given to its workhorse 'Thunderbolt' and a 'K9' medal to a female dog 'Sophia'. 
    • This is the first time that an Indian security force has ordered the minting of special medals in this regard.

MOUs & Agreements
  • The International Energy Agency (IAE) is going to partner with India to implement its Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) initiative globally for energy savings. 
    • IAE has been impressed with performance of India’s UJALA programme in terms of vastly improving access to LED lighting while reducing their cost drastically.

Business & Economy
  • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio has claimed to have created “a world record” by crossing the 1.6 crore subscribers-mark in its first month of operations. 
    • The venture achieved this growth faster than any other operator or start-up in the world, including Facebook.
  • The Union Government has extended anti-dumping duty on import of certain Chinese products, used in garment, toys and footwear manufacturing, for another five years i.e. till 2021. 
    • Decision in this regard was taken by Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) based on recommendations of the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD)
    • This extension will protect domestic industry from the harm caused by dumping (import) of the cheap Chinese products.
