Topic 1 : "Effective, but not equitable"

  • Effective - successful in producing a desired or expected result
  • Equitable - treating everyone fairly and in the same way (impartial)
  • Dynamic - continuously changing
  • Justified - if you are justified in doing something, you have a good reason for doing it
  • Shore up something - to give support or help to something that is having problems or is likely to fail
  • Lagging - the act of falling or staying behind
  • Revenues - the income that a government or company receives regularly
  • Flexible -  able to be changed easily according to the situation
  • Capped - a limit on the amount of money that can be charged
  • Robust - strong and successful
  • Component - one of the different parts of something
  • Infrastructure - the basic systems and services a country or organization uses in order to work effectively
  • Amenity - something that makes it comfortable or enjoyable to live or work somewhere
  • Imperatives - something that is very important and urgent
  • Ideal - best / of more suitable type
  • Premium - the amount by which the price of a share is higher than its original price
  • Cascading - fall quickly in large amounts
  • Coupled - combined
  • Unlike - different from
  • Monopoly - (an organization or group, that has complete control of something, especially an area of business, so that others have no share
  • Better off - in a better situation
  • Priced out - the state of being unable to invest in a particular product or service
  • Self-sufficent - needing no outside help

Topic 2 : "Reining in the adventurist North"

  • Reining in Something / Someone - to control unwanted activity or growth
  • Adventurist - some one who is willing to take risks in order to gain an unfair advantage in business or politics
  • Explosive - sudden and great
  • Yield - to produce something
  • Reverberations - an effect that spreads over a wide area or lasts for a long time
  • Alarm bells - something that makes you feel something unpleasant or dangerous is going to happen
  • Warhead - the front part of a bomb or missile that explodes
  • Herald - a sign that something will happen, change, etc
  • Era - a period of time that has a particular quality or character
  • Heightened - to become stronger
  • Brinkmanship - the act of deliberately taking risks and making a situation as bad as it can be in order to force a particular result
  • Peninsula - a long piece of land that is mostly surrounded by water, but is joined at one end to a larger area of land
  • Stems from something - to start or develop as the result of something
  • Claim - to say that something is true, even though there is no definite proof
  • Detonation - the act of making something such as a bomb explode
  • Regime - government
  • Miniaturising - the process of making something very small using modern technology
  • Ballistic missile - a type of missile that travels long distances and cannot be controlled after it has been launched
  • Trajectory - the high curving line in which an object such as a missile moves through the air
  • Magnitude - the strength of an earthquake, measured with numbers from 1 to 10, where 10 is the most powerful
  • Tremor - small earthquake
  • In parallel - if two or more things happen in parallel, they happen at the same time and are connected
  • Sophisticated - complicated and advanced in design
  • Condemnation - a public statement in which someone criticizes someone or something seriously
  • Dampen -  to make something such as a feeling or hope less strong
  • Defiance - refusal to obey a person or rule
  • Sanction - an official order, such as the stopping of trade, that is taken against a country in order to make it obey international law
  • Slapped something on - to order that something should be done immediately, especially as a punishment
  • Periodically - in a way that is repeated after a particular period of time
  • Imposed - to introduce something such as a new law or new system, and force people to accept it
  • Emerging - just beginning to exist or be noticed
  • Hardships - difficult or unpleasant conditions of life
  • Famine - a situation in which there is not enough food for a great number of people, causing illness and death
  • Poverty - the condition of being extremely poor
  • Sampant - (of something bad) getting worse quickly and in an uncontrolled way
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Re-examine - to look at or think about something carefully again
  • Isolating - to keep someone separate from others
  • Coordinated - to organize things into a system
  • Strategy - a plan or method for achieving something
  • Spoiler - something that is produced to compete with something else and make it less successful
  • Notwithstanding - despite something
  • Adherence - the action of continuing to obey a rule, law, agreement etc
  • Exacerbate - to make a problem become worse
  • Protested - to disagree strongly with something
  • Treaty - a written agreement between two or more countries, formally approved and signed by their leaders
  • Ally - a country that makes an agreement with another country that they will work together to help each other, especially in a war
  • Set aside - to officially state that a particular legal decision will no longer be followed
  • Collaboratively - in the manner of working with others on a joint projec
  • Agenda - a plan or aim that is kept secret
  • Standing stock of weapons - a total number of weapons held by an organization
  • Sustainable - capable of continuing for a long time at the same level
  • The negotiating table - a situation or place in which people formally discuss something in order to reach an agreement
  • Outcome - the final result of a process, meeting, activity etc
