Topic 1 : "Return of the Cauvery crisis"

  • Cauvery - Kaveri river of South India
  • Monsoon - rainy season
  • Falling short - to fail to reach an amount or standard that was expected or hoped for, causing disappointment
  • Deficient - not good enough
  • Rushing - moving quickly
  • Citing - to mention something as a reason why something has happened
  • Crisis - a time of great suffering
  • Erupting - to start suddenly with a lot of violence or noise
  • Sporadic - happening sometimes; not regular or continuous
  • Litigation - the process of taking a case to a court of law so that a judgment can be made
  • Ad hoc - done only when needed for a specific purpose, without planning or preparation
  • Adjudication - to act as judge in a competition or argument, or to make a formal decision about something
  • Mutual - belonging to two or more people
  • Shortfall - a lack of something that you need or want
  • Distress - 1 a feeling that you have when you are very unhappy, worried, or upset
  • Ensure - to make sure that something happens or is done
  • Award - a judgment given by a court of law
  • Tribunal - a special law court organized to judge a particular case
  • Deficiency - a state of not having, or not having enough, of something that is needed
  • Pro rata - calculated according to the individual situation
  • Aspect - a particular part, feature, or quality of something
  • Regulatory - controlling
  • Authority - a group of people with official responsibility for a particular area of activity
  • Oversee - to watch or organize an activity to make sure that it is being done correctly
  • Comprising - consisting
  • Representative - someone who speaks or does something officially for another person or group of people
  • Approach - to meet someone in order to do something such as make a request or business agreement
  • Adequate - enough or satisfactory for a particular purpose
  • Counterpart -     a person, who has the same purpose as another one in a different place or organization
  • Contend - to compete in order to win something
  • Betraying - if someone betrays something such as a promise, they do not do what they promised
  • Desire - a strong feeling of wanting to have or to do something
  • Empathy -  the ability to share someone else's feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in that person's situation
  • Dilly-dally - to waste time
  • Notifying - to tell someone officially about something
  • Devise - to invent a plan, system, object, etc., using your intelligence
  • Sustainable - capable of continuing for a long time at the same level
  • Depleting - reducing
  • Acreage - an area of land, often measured in acres
  • Intensive - involving
  • Hold the key - to have control of something
  • Initiative - a new plan or process to achieve something or solve a problem
  • Hostility - opposition to something
  • Hold sway - to be the main influence on people’s opinions or behaviour

Topic 2 : "The Grumbling 20"

  • Grumbling - to complain about someone or something in an annoyed way
  • Noble - behaving in an honest and brave way that other people admire
  • Far-sighted - able to imagine what effects an action will have in the future so that you make good decisions
  • Looming - (of something unwanted or unpleasant) about to happen soon and causing worry
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Doughty - determined and not easily frightened
  • To take over the reins - to take the control of something
  • Regulatory - controlling
  • Reform - to make an improvement in something
  • Degenerated - to become worse
  • Divergent - different from each other
  • Inhabitant - a person or animal that lives in a particular place
  • Communiqué - an official statement, especially to newspapers, radio, or television
  • Resistance - refusal to accept something new
  • Excess -  an amount that is more than acceptable, expected, or reasonable
  • Climate - the general weather conditions usually found in a particular place
  • Agenda - all the things that need to be done
  • Notwithstanding - despite something
  • Disappearing - to no longer happen or exist
  • Solidarity - agreement between and support for the members of a group, especially a political group
  • Ratifying - to make an agreement official by signing it or formally accepting it
  • Dramatic - sudden and surprising
  • Contrarily - in opposite way
  • Negotiator - someone who tries to help two groups who disagree to reach an agreement with each other
  • Fobbed off something / someone - to convince someone to accept someone or something you want to get rid of
  • Insist - to  say firmly or demand forcefully
  • Numerous - existing in large numbers
  • Low-key - without much activity or reaction
  • Enforcement - the process of making sure that something happens
  • Advancing - moving forwards or progressing
  • Erosion - reduction or destruction of something important
  • Gathering - a group of people meeting together
  • Vague - not clearly expressed, known, described, or decided
  • Collaborative - involving people or groups working together to produce something
  • Evolved - developed slowly
  • Regulation - an official rule that controls the way that things are done
  • Emerged from the ashes - to start exists again
  • Meltdown - a sudden and complete failure of a company, organization, or system
  • Put the brakes - to slow down or stop an activity
  • Excessive - much more than is reasonable or necessary
  • Outlived - to live or exist longer than someone or something
  • Revert - to return to a previous state
  • Overlapping - if two or more activities, subject overlap, they have some parts that are the same
  • Conversation - a talk between two or more people (groups), usually a private and informal one
  • Re-examine - to look at or think about something carefully again
  • Recast - to change the way that someone or something is or appears to be
