International Affairs
  • Today (29th September) is World Heart Day.
    • The World Heart Day is an international campaign held on 29th September by the World Heart Foundation to inform people about cardiovascular diseases, which are the biggest cause of death. 
    • This day promotes preventative measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
    • Theme of the year 2016 : “Power your Life
  • Today (29th September) World Maritime Day.
    • This day is observed to highlight the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment. 
    • Theme of the year 2016 : “Shipping: indispensable to the world”. 
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval to ratify the Paris Agreement (on Climate Change) on Gandhi Jayanti i.e. on 2nd October 2016. 
    • The Paris Agreement was adopted by 185 nations in December 2015. 
    • India had signed the agreement in New York in April 2016. 
    • So far, 191 countries have signed the agreement.
National Affairs
  • The Indian Army conducted surgical strikes on terror launch pads in Pakistan's territory yesterday's night, Director General of Military Operations Lt Gen Ranbir Singh announced today. 
    • During the operations, significant casualties were inflicted on the terrorists, Singh informed.
    • As per reports, the Indian Army has destroyed at least five terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) and the special forces were para-dropped.  
    • What is a Surgical Strike ?
      • A surgical strike is a military attack which is intended to result in damage to the intended legitimate target only. 
      • It aims for minimal collateral damage to surrounding structures and general public infrastructure. 
  • India's unemployment rate reached a five-year high of 5% in 2015-16, the Labour Bureau's annual survey on employment stated. 
    • Females had the highest unemployment rate of 8.7% at all-India level, against 4% for males and 4.3% for transgenders. 
    • Females also had the lowest labour force participation rate of 23.7%, compared to 75% for males and 48% for transgenders.
    • According to the this survey, Tripura had the highest unemployment rate of 19.7% in 2015-16. 
      • It was followed by Sikkim with an unemployment rate of 18.1% and Lakshadweep with 16.1%. 
    • In contrast, Daman and Diu had the lowest unemployment rate of 0.3%, followed by Gujarat (0.9%) and Karnataka (1.5%).
Business & Economy
  • India's financial capital Mumbai, which is worth over ₹52 lakh crore, is the wealthiest city in the country, according to the New World Wealth Report. 
    • Mumbai is also home to 45,000 millionaires and 28 billionaires, the report added. 
    • Mumbai is followed by Delhi (around ₹30 lakh crore) and Bengaluru (around ₹21 lakh crore) at the second and third places respectively.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Telangana government has signed an agreement with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to boost the content of Mana TV, an initiative started in undivided Andhra Pradesh, for the benefit of the viewers in the state. 
    • Mana TV was started to provide programmes on distance education, telemedicine, and agriculture extension. 
    • This agreement would also provide coaching to students.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Singapore and India in the field of Industrial Property Cooperation.
    • Note : The MoU will be signed at the upcoming official state visit of Singapore’s Prime Minister (Lee Hsien Loong) to India from 4 to 7 October, 2016.

  • Online payments and m-commerce platform Paytm's Founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma has been named the 'Best Businessman' at the annual 'GQ Men of the Year Awards 2016'. 
    • Sharma is the first Indian startup entrepreneur to be on the list.
General Knowledge
  • The post of the National Security Advisor (NSA) was created in 1998 by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
    • NSA is the PM's primary advisor on security matters.
    • Brajesh Mishra was appointed the first NSA of India

  • The United States has named diplomat Jeffrey DeLaurentis as its first official ambassador to Cuba in over 50 years.
Books & Authors
  • Author of the bestselling novel 'The Da Vinci Code', Dan Brown, is set to release a new Robert Langdon thriller titled 'Origin' on September 26, 2017. 
    • In keeping with his "trademark style", Brown interweaves codes, science, history, and art in the novel.
Sports
  • Virat Kohli has retained the top spot in the latest ICC T20I batsmen rankings, followed by Australians Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell at second and third spot respectively. 
    • Note : Kohli will remain on top until the end of the year, with no other T20I series scheduled.
  • Paralympics gold medalist Devendra Jhajharia was named Sportsman of the Year at the GQ Men of the Year Awards 2016
    • Devendra, who had his left hand amputated at the age of eight, broke his own world record to win gold in javelin throw at the recently-concluded Rio Paralympics. 
    • Note : Devendra is the only Indian to win two Paralympic golds.
