Meet India's First Medal Winner at Rio Olympics 2016 : Sakshi Malik

Indian Female wrestler from Rohtak Sakshi Malik ended India's painful wait for a medal at the Rio Olympic Games by clinching the Bronze in the 58kg category, pulling off a sensational 8-5 victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan in the play-off bout, at Rio de Janeiro.

The 23-year-old from Haryana, a silver medallist at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and
bronze winner at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, won the First Medal to India in Rio Olympics 2016.

Important Points to Note :
  • Sakshi became only the fourth woman athlete from India to win an Olympic medal.
    • Weight-lifter Karnam Malleshwari was the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal for India when she won a bronze at the 2000 Sydney Games.
    • Boxer MC Mary Kom and shuttler Saina Nehwal had won a bronze each at the 2012 London Games.
  • Overall, Sakshi has won India's fifth wrestling medal in the Olympic Games.
