Topic 1 : "Calming the Valley"

  • Valley - an area of low land between hills or mountains, often with a river running through it
  • Commander - a person in authority, especially over a body of troops or a military operation
  • Gunned somebody down - to shoot someone and kill or seriously injure them
  • Mobilising - to  prepare and organize group of people for a purpose
  • Disaffected - dissatisfied
  • Aftermath - the period that follows an unpleasant event or accident, and the effects that it causes
  • Pitched battles - a large fight in which both sides stay in the same place
  • Engulfed - to surround and cover something or someone completely
  • Legend - someone very famous and admired, usually because of their ability in a particular area
  • Coasted - move easily without using power
  • Poster boy - famous person
  • Homegrown - if something is homegrown, it belongs to or was developed in your own country
  • Spectacularly - extremely
  • Stone-pelting - to throw number of stones quickly at someone
  • Protest - an occasion when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting, carrying signs, etc
  • Paramilitary - paramilitary group is organized like an army but is not official and often not legal
  • Evolved - develop gradually
  • Lethal - very harmful or destructive (sufficient to cause death)
  • Injured - hurt or physically harmed
  • Casualties - people killed or injured in a war or accident
  • Perceive - become aware or conscious of something / come to realize or understand
  • Siege - the surrounding of a place by an armed force in order to defeat those defending it
  • Imperative - crucial (very important)
  • Disproportionate - too large or too small in comparison with something else
  • Fuelling - to increase / make something stronger
  • Impressionable - easily influenced
  • Aggrieved - unhappy and angry because of unfair treatment
  • Brute force - very strong or forceful / very harsh
  • Dissuade - to convince someone not to do something
  • Demonstrable - able to be proved
  • Mourning - the expression of sorrow for someone's death
  • Fallen - killed
  • Spectrum - wide range
  • Dispersed - distribute or spread over a wide area
  • Pellets- bullets
  • Mainstream - the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are shared by most people and regarded as normal
  • Countered - speak or act in opposition to
  • Fleshed out something - to add more details or information to something
  • Eventually - in the end
  • Illusion - a false idea or belief
  • Restive - unwilling to be controlled or be patient
  • Funeral - a religious ceremony for burying or burning the body of a dead person
  • Mourners -  people who are very sad about somebody's death
Topic 2 : "Tournament of the underdog"

  • Tournament - a competition for teams or single players in which a series of games is played, and the winners of each game play against each other until only one winner is left
  • Underdog - in a competition, the person or team considered to be the weakest and the least likely to win
  • Knockout - a competition in which only the winners of each stage play in the next stage, until one competitor or team is the final winner
  • Triumph - a great victory or achievement
  • Possess -  to have or own something / to have a particular quality
  • Resolve - strong determination
  • Second to none - the best (as good as or better than all others)
  • Dour - unhappy and very serious
  • Denying - sto say that something is not true
  • By the skin of your teeth - if you do something by the skin of your teeth, you only just succeed in doing it
  • Undeniably - certainly true
  • Sobbing - cry noisly
  • Cement - to make something stronger
  • Legacy - something that is a part of your history or that remains from an earlier time
  • Soul-crushing - causing a person to lose confidence, hope, and energy; discouraging
  • Heal - if a bad situation or painful emotion heals, it ends or improves, and if something heals it, it makes it end or improve
  • Wounds - a problem or great unhappiness
  • Hauntingly - in a way that cannot be forgotten
  • Arena - a large, flat area surrounded by seats used for sports or entertainment
  • Poignant - causing or having a very sharp feeling of sadness
  • Detract from something - to make something seem less valuable or less deserving of admiration than it really is
  • En route - on the way
  • Massacre - an act of killing a lot of people
  • Passionate - having very strong feelings or emotions
  • Fervid - having or showing feelings that are very strong
