Topic 1 : "The message in the Brussels attack"

  • Security threat - a possible danger that manages the security and cause harm
  • Massive - large and heavy
  • Crackdown - a ​situation in which someone ​starts to ​deal with ​bad or ​illegal ​behaviour in a more ​serious way
  • De facto - in ​fact (whether by right or not)
  • Perpetrator - someone who has committed a crime
  • Establishment - organization
  • Several - some (more than two but not many)
  • Neighbourhood - surrounding / nearby area
  • Combing - to search thoroughly (look through)
  • Reportedly - ​according to what many ​people say
  • Tragic - very sad
  • Bluntly - ​to speak without ​trying to be ​polite or ​considering other people's ​feelings
  • Context - the ​situation within which something ​exists or ​happens
  • Faraway - a ​long way away
  • Setback - something that ​happens that ​delays or ​prevents a ​process from ​developing
  • Caliphate - an ​Islamic ​state, ​especially one ​ruled by a ​single ​religious and ​political ​leader
  • Sheer - completely / nothing other than
  • Rationale - the ​reasons that ​cause you belive in something
  • Territory - an area of land that is considered as ​belonging to a ​particular ​person or country
  • Relevant - closely connected with what is ​happening
  • Recruit - a new ​member of an ​organization (​especially the ​army)
  • Panic - sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety
  • Cohesion - the ​situation when the ​members of a ​group or ​society are ​united
  • Reap - to collect / gather
  • Dividend - profit
  • High on something - stood at top position of something
  • Hit list - a ​list of ​people / organization who someone ​intends to ​murder or take ​unpleasant ​action against
  • Pluralistic - different ​types of ​people, who have different ​beliefs and ​opinions, within the same ​society

  • Imperil - to put something or someone at ​risk or in ​danger

  • Succession - a ​number of ​similar ​events that ​happen, after each other
  • Alternately - in a ​manner in which two things each ​replace the other

  • Overarching - most important
  • Mainstays - the most ​important ​part of something (here imoprtant parties)
  • Includes - to contain something
  • Forge - to make or produce something
  • Significant - imoprtant
  • In tandem - working together
  • Mount - to organize / initiate
  • Semblance - a ​situation or ​condition that is ​similar to what is ​wanted or ​expected
  • Formidable - ​causing you to have ​fear or ​respect for someone because that ​person is ​powerful
  • Projected - planned for the future / ​calculated ​based on ​information already ​known
  • Sought-after - much in demand
  • Ally - someone who ​helps and ​supports
  • Run-up - the ​final ​period of ​time before an ​important ​event
  • Courting - to pay special attention to (someone) in an attempt to win their support or favour
  • Instincts - behaviour
  • Floated - to ​move or ​act without ​purpose
  • Lone ranger - one who acts alone and without consultation or the approval of others
  • Garnered - to collect something
  • Translating - converting
  • Alliance - a union or association formed for mutual benefit

  • Inarticulate - ​unable to ​express ​feelings or ​ideas ​clearly
  • Perennially -  repeatedly
  • Potential - having the capacity to develop something in the future
  • Fray - fight
  • Concrete - clear
  • Content - satisfy
  • Viable - capable of working successfully
  • Equidistant - equally ​far or ​close (at equal distances)
