Topic 1 : "Undermining the SYL Canal"

  • Undermining - destroying the base or foundation of something
  • Thumb your nose at someone - to show no ​respect toward someone or something
  • Status quo - the ​present ​situation or ​condition
  • Unanimously - without opposition (with the agreement of all people involved)
  • Emotive - causing ​strong ​feelings
  • Wind down - slowly lose power
  • Political adventurism - the willingness to take risks in politics
  • Consensus - a general agreement.
  • Unilateral - ​involving only one ​group or ​country
  • Repudiation - rejection of a proposal or idea
  • Onus - something that is one's duty or responsibility
  • Reiterate - say something again or a number of times
  • Redline - a boundary or limit which should not be crossed
  • Rehabilitation - to ​return something to a good ​condition
  • Assent - approval or agreement
  • Scooping - digging
  • Flora - the plants of a particular place
  • Fever pitch - a state of extreme excitement
  • Frenzied - uncontrolled and ​excited
  • Crisis - a ​time of ​great ​disagreement, ​confusion, or ​suffering
  • Legislation - a ​law or set of ​laws ​suggested by a ​government and made ​official by a ​parliament
  • Reneged - to ​fail to ​keep a ​promise or an ​agreement
  • Riparian - relating to or situated on the banks of a river
  • Abdication - to ​stop ​controlling or ​managing something that you are in ​charge of
  • Aggravated - to make a ​bad ​situation ​worse
  • Wilful - doing something bad intentionally
  • Reap - gather
  • Dividend - the ​profit (of a ​company) that is ​paid to the ​people who own ​shares in it
  • Spectre - the ​idea of something ​unpleasant that might ​happen in the ​future
  • Barren - ​unable to ​produce ​plants or ​fruit
  • Riot - a violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd
  • Outrage - an extremely strong reaction of anger
  • Fomented - to ​cause ​trouble to ​develop

Topic 2 : "Politics of intimidation"

  • Intimidation - to ​frighten or ​warn someone (usually inorder to make them do what you want)
  • Sanction - a ​strong ​action taken in ​order to make ​people ​obey a ​law or ​rule, or a ​punishment given when they do not ​obey
  • Outraging - a ​feeling of ​anger and ​shock
  • Colleague - a person with whom one works in a profession or business
  • Chant - to ​repeat or ​sing a word or phrase ​continuously
  • Sequence - a particular order in which related things follow each other
  • Unbecoming - not ​correct or not ​acceptable
  • Criticize - to ​express ​disapproval of someone or something
  • Memorials - a statue or structure established to remind people of a person or event
  • Contemporaneous - happening or ​existing at the same ​period of ​time
  • Expenditure - an amount of money spent
  • Loyalties - your ​feelings of ​support or ​duty towards someone or something
  • Uproar - a ​situation in which a lot of ​people ​complain about something ​angrily or make a lot of ​noise
  • Coalition - the ​joining together of different ​political ​parties or ​groups for a ​particular ​purpose (usually for a ​limited ​time)
  • Threatening - warning
  • Resolution - an ​official ​decision

  • Contest - to oppose an action as mistaken or wrong
  • Precedent - an ​action, that has already ​happened and can be used as a ​reason why a ​similar ​action or ​decision should be ​performed
  • Hollow out - to make something empty
  • Asserting - to say a fact or belief confidently and forcefully
  • Spectacular - very ​exciting to ​look at / great
  • Privileges - special rights / advantages available only to a particular person or group
  • Autonomy - the right of independent / self-government
  • Dissent - a ​strong ​difference of ​opinion on a ​particular ​subject
  • Potent - having great power / influence
  • Insistence - forceful behaviour
  • Alarm - a ​warning of ​danger
  • Persuasion - a ​particular set of ​beliefs (religious or political ones)
  • Ideologue - a ​person who ​believes very ​strongly in ​particular ​principles and ​tries to ​follow them ​carefully
  • Patriarch - leader (mainly of a religious group)
  • Polarize - to divide a group (​contains different ​people or ​opinions) into two ​completely ​opposing ​groups
  • Profess - to state something
  • Majoritarian - a person who supports government by a majority
  • Consensus - a general agreement
  • Foreboding - a ​feeling that something very ​bad is going to ​happen ​soon
  • Touchstone - an ​established ​standard or ​principle by which something is ​judged
  • Migrating - moving from one part of something to another
