Topic 1 : "The case against Ashok Chavan"

  • Accord - an official agreement
  • Successor - a person who follows next in order
  • Assessment - the action of evaluating
  • Twists and turns - complicated dealings
  • Scandal - an ​actio that ​causes a ​public ​feeling of ​shock and ​strong ​moral ​disapproval
  • Ought to - need to
  • Accountability - responsibility
  • Alleged - said (without proof)
  • Quid pro quo - a favour or advantage granted in return for something
  • Derailed - to ​prevent a ​plan or ​process from ​succeeding
  • Declined - politely refused
  • Conspiracy - the ​activity of ​secretly ​planning with other ​people to do something ​bad or ​illegal
  • Nexus - an ​important ​connection between ​group of things
  • Derived - to get something
  • Uphold - confirm or support
  • Sanction - official permission or approval for an action
  • Demitted - resign from (an office or position)
  • Frivolous - not having any serious purpose or value
  • Ostensible - appearing to be one thing when it is really something ​else
  • Bugbear - a ​particular thing that ​annoys or ​upsets you
  • Legitimate - reasonable and ​acceptable
  • Abolished - to end an ​activity ​officially
  • Probity - the quality of having strong moral principles (honesty)

Topic 2 : "A jobs scheme that steadied India"

  • Living up to something - to be as good as something / someone hopes
  • Livelihood - the way someone ​earns the ​money ​people need to ​pay for ​food, a ​place to ​live, ​clothing, etc
  • Sceptics - people who ​questions or doubts something
  • Prone - likely to ​experience a ​particular ​problem
  • Varies - different from each other
  • Asymmetry - lack of equality or equivalence between parts of something
  • Uneven - not regular / equal
  • Distress - a ​feeling of ​extreme ​worry, ​sadness, or ​pain
  • Drought - a ​long ​period when there is no ​rain
  • Augment - to ​increase the ​size or ​value of something by ​adding something to it
  • Sluggishness - moving or ​operating more ​slowly than ​usual and with less ​energy or ​power
  • Outlay - an amount of money spent on something
  • Slack - loose
  • Decline - reduction [Note : In the above article Decline means to refuse politely]
  • Regime - government
  • Grudgingly - unwillingly
  • Travesty - represent in a false way
  • Flawed - not ​perfect (containing ​mistakes)
  • Agrarian - relating to the ​land, ​especially the use of ​land for ​farming
  • Efficacy - the ability to produce a desired or intended result
