Topic 1 : "Betting big on big data"

  • Buzzword - a word from a ​particular ​subject ​area that has ​become ​fashionable by being used a lot (​especially on ​television and in the ​newspapers)
  • Pumping - filling with something (here Data)
  • Context - the ​situation within which something ​exists or ​happens
  • Explosion - a ​large ​increase in the ​number of something that ​happens very ​quickly
  • Exceeds - to be ​greater than a ​number or ​amount
  • Precision - the quality of being exact and accurate
  • Vexing - annoying, ​worrying, or ​causing ​problems
  • Untangle - to make a ​complicated ​subject or ​problem ​clear and ​able to be ​understood
  • Lethal - sufficient to cause death
  • Errant - ​behaving ​wrongly in some way
  • Variant - something that is ​slightly different from other ​similar things
  • Combed - to search thoroughly
  • Pathogenic - able to cause disease
  • Fearsome - frightening
  • Outbreak - a sudden occurrence of something unwelcome (war or disease)
  • Customised - modified (something) to suit a particular task
  • Predict - say or estimate what will happen in the future (especially the result of something)
  • Overlaying - cover the surface of something
  • Pinpoint - to find or identify
  • Ambitious - having a strong desire and determination to succeed
  • Consortia - an association with several organizations
  • Privacy - a state in which one is not observed or disturbed by other people
  • Leverage - use something to maximum advantage
  • Interpretation - the action of explaining the meaning of something
  • Ethical - relating to moral principles of what is right and what is wrong
  • Comprehensive - complete and ​including everything that is ​necessary
  • Archiving - storing all the necessary ​records in one place for future use
  • Collaboration - working with someone to get better results
  • Usher - to guide people
  • Innovation - the use of a new ​idea or ​method

Topic 2 : "Sugar tax may be the bitter pill to cut obesity"

  • Bitter pill - something that is very ​unpleasant but must be ​accepted
  • Took a stand -  to have a strong opinion about something and not change it
  • Urge - recommend (something) strongly
  • Beverage - a drink of any type (other than water)
  • Obesity - being ​extremely ​fat (that is ​dangerous for ​health)
  • Rationale - reasons
  • Intervention - interference in a ​difficult ​situation in ​order to ​improve it
  • Impact - effect
  • Prevalence - ​existing very ​commonly or ​happening often
  • Energy-dense - the amount of energy (or calories) per gram of food
  • Stratum - a level or class to which people are assigned according to their social status
  • Sugar-laden - full of sugar
  • Rein - control
  • Burgeoning - begin to grow or increase rapidly
  • Paediatrics - the branch of medicine dealing with children and their diseases
  • Double whammy - a ​situation when two ​unpleasant things ​happen at ​almost the same ​time
  • Underweight - insufficient weight
  • Sedentary Lifestyle - Lifestyle in which you have to spend much time seated (sitting)
  • Singularly - in a remarkable or noticeable way

Topic 3 : "Masculinity is in a crisis. Here’s ‘Y’"

  • Masculinity - characteristic of a man
  • Crisis - danger
  • Manhood - the ​state of being a man
  • Nastiest - very bad or unpleasant
  • Blow - damage
  • Repository - a ​place where things are ​stored
  • Diminution - a reduction in the size
  • Sire - the male parent of an animal
  • Offspring - children
  • Collaborating - work jointly on an activity or project
  • Upped - increased (a level or amount).
  • Devoid - lack of something
  • Gender-bending - reversing the genders
  • Quibble - criticism
  • Frenetic - involving a lot of ​excited ​movement or ​activity
  • By virtue of something - as a ​result of something
  • Solitary - single
  • Replenish - fill up again (restore)
  • Consternation - a ​feeling of ​worry, ​shock, or ​confusion
  • Ominous - giving the worrying impression that something bad is going to happen
  • Demise - the end of something that was ​previously ​considered to be ​powerful
  • Flurry - a ​sudden, ​short ​period of ​activity
  • Proclamations - a clear declaration of something
  • Attrition - the process of reducing something's strength or effectiveness
  • Diverged - to ​follow a different ​direction (different)
  • Infertility - inability of a person / animal / plant to reproduce by natural means
  • Formidable - very difficult to deal with
  • Negotiated - to ​deal with something ​difficult
  • Incontrovertible - impossible to ​deny because it is absolutely ​true
