Hi Friends, I am Kani. Here I am sharing English Vocabulary from Editorial section of The Hindu dated December 21st 2015. Happy Reading :)

Topic 1 : "Justice that is rehabilitative"


  • Clamour - a loud and confused noise (people shouting)
  • Underpin - to support
  • Outrage - strong reaction of anger
  • Juvenile - young person (teenager)
  • Convict - a person found guilty of a criminal offence and serving a sentence of imprisonment
  • Detention - a punishment in which a person must stay at somewhere (holding by the police)
  • Heinous (Crime) - very ​bad and ​shocking crime
  • Tenable - based on evidence
  • Unreformed - not changed or improved
  • Permissible - permitted / allowed
  • Stint - to give something in limited amounts (here : imprisionment)
  • Conflict - a serious disagreement or argument
  • Reformatory institution - an institution to which young offenders are sent as an alternative to prison
  • Futile - pointless
  • Grieving - feeling sorrow (mainly because of somebody's death)
  • Unprecedented - never done or known before
  • Outpouring  - an act of expressing an emotion or feeling in a very powerful way
  • Introspect - examine one's own thoughts or feelings
  • Rehabilitation -  to teach (a criminal in prison) to live a normal and productive life
  • Confinement - being held and can't move freely
  • Foul - unfair / pollute
  • Innate - natural
  • Propensity - natural tendency to behave in a certain way
  • Cherubic - having the innocence of a young child
  • Unregenerate - sinful / very bad
  • Redemption - the action of saving or being saved from sin
  • Recidivism - going back to a previous behavior
  • Carve out - to make or create
  • Retrograde - directed or moving backwards

Topic 2 : "Not quite Congress’s 1977 moment"


  • Allegation - a ​statement, made without giving ​proof, that someone has done something ​wrong or ​illegal
  • Defunct - no longer existing or functioning.
  • Subsidiary - a company controlled by a holding company
  • Fraudulent - dishonest and ​illegal
  • Instance  - an example
  • Persecution - harassment
  • Indisputable - unquestionable
  • Revive - to bring back
  • Heralding - announcing important news
  • Catalyst - an ​event that ​causes ​great ​change
  • Overhaul - overtake
  • Vigorous - forceful
  • Moribund - dead / at the point of death
  • Articulate - ​able to ​express ​thoughts and ​feelings ​easily and ​clearly / free movement
  • Solidarity - unity
  • Inextricably - impossible to separate
  • Expended - to use or spend (something)
  • Ecosystem - a complex network or interconnected system
