International Affairs
  • The World Health Organization today announced that the Ebola-ravaged Sierra Leone had beaten an 18-month outbreak that killed almost 4,000 citizens  including more than 200 health workers and plunged the economy into severe recession.
National Affairs
  • Today (7th November) is National Cancer Awareness Day.
    • This day is observed across the country to spread awareness about the disease.
    • There were 2.9 million cases of cancer in the country with 1.1 million new cases being reported annually. 
    • This day was announced by then Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on 7th November 2014.
    • Important Note : World Cancer Day is observed on 4th February every year.
  • Nation celebrates freedom fighter Bipin ChandraPal’s birth anniversary today.
    • He was among the triumvirate of Lal Bal Pal.
  • Nation celebrates birth anniversary of BharatRatna & Nobel laureate Sir C V Raman today.
  • Indian Railways has doubled the ticket cancellation charge as it has proposed to change the refund rules to help genuine passengers getting confirmed tickets. 
    • There will be no refund after the departure of train and one has to get the refund four hours before the departure, according to the new refund rules. 
    • The revised refund rules will be effective from November 12. 
  • Jharkhand government has announced a package of nearly 1,400 crore rupees for drought-hit farmers.
  • With Diwali and winter round the corner, the govenrment today decided to set up a control room to undertake daily review of pollution level and monitor air quality in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR).
  • A Committee of Eminent Persons (CEP), headed by Prof Ashok Misra, has recommended major changes in entrance examination structure for prestigious institutes like IIT, including setting up of a National Testing Service, which would hold tests on the basis of which around four lakh students would be shortlisted for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
    • Many of the recommendations of the Committee are aimed to wean IIT aspirants away from the dependence on coaching institutes.
  • The long-pending ‘One Rank One Pension’ (OROP) scheme for ex-servicemen was tonight brought into force with government issuing a notification which will benefit over 25 lakh veterans and war widows.

Science & Technology
  • Indian Army today successfully testfired 300 kilometres range Brahmos supersonic land attack cruise missile at Pokhran (Rajasthan).
    • The missile, having a range of 290-km and a Mach 2.8 speed, is capable of being launched from land, sea, sub-sea and air against sea and land targets.
    • Important Note : BrahMos is a joint venture between DRDO of India and NPOM of Russia.

Business & Economy
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a Rs 80,000-crore package for all-round development of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The World Economic Forum has announced that in the coming years, India is positioned much more favourably than China in terms of growth.
  • The Maharashtra government has decided to disinvest its assets in Seven loss-making Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) in the state.
    • The seven ailing PSEs in the line of disinvestment are,
      • MAFCO,
      • MELTRON,
      • Maharashtra Land Development Corporation,
      • Maharashtra Textile Development Corporation and
      • Vidarbha, Marathwada and Konkan Development Corporations.

Sports
  • India beat South Africa by 108 runs in the first cricket test at Mohali; Man of the Match Ravendra Jadeja took five wickets in second innings.
