International Affairs
  • Today (10th November) is World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) / World Science Day.
    • This day is annually observed on November 10 to raise awareness of the benefits of science worldwide.
    • World Science Day for Peace and Development 2015 Theme : Science for a Sustainable Future.
  • India has been reelected by the UN General Assembly to a Six year term on the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
    • Important Points to Note :
      • India has won all the five elections it contested at the UN this year, following last year's reelection to the UN Human Rights Council.
      • In April the UN Economic and Social Committee (ECOSOC) elected India to the executive councils of UNICEF and the World Food Programme, the governing council of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
      • Along with India, 22 countries including the United States and Pakistan were reelected to UNCITRAL.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a three day visit to United Kingdom on
    Thursday (12th NOvember).
    • During this visit, Mr Modi will hold talks with his British counterpart David Cameron and have luncheon meeting with the Queen.
    • Political and security related issues and discussion on global and regional matters are high on the agenda of talks.

Science & Technology
  • India is going to launch its latest communication satellite GSAT-15 from Kourou in French Guiana tomorrow morning.
  • The Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has launched 3 web portals / mobile apps. They are,
    • e-Pathshala, Saaransh and National Programme on School Standards and Evaluation Framework (Shala Siddhi) 
    • E-Pathshala : 
      • This is a web portal which hosts educational resources for Students, Teachers, Parents, researchers. 
      • This portal contains textbooks and other e-books as E-Pub 3.0 and Flipbooks in English, Hindi and Urdu. 
    • Shaala Siddhi :  
      • This is a comprehensive instrument for school evaluation which enables the schools to evaluate their performance in more focused and strategic manner to facilitate them to make professional judgement for continuous improvement. 
      • The web-portal of the framework will help all schools to assess themselves and the results can be seen by all enabling them to provide feedback. 
      • The initiative has already been successfully piloted in four districts of Tamil Nadu. 
    • Saransh
      • This is a tool which allows the schools to identify areas of improvement in students, teachers and curriculum to facilitate and implement change. 
      • The platform is presently available for classes 9th to 12th and provides a comprehensive overview of standard 10th performance since 2007 and standard 12th performance since 2009 till the current academic session.
      •  Presently, results of CBSE are available on this portal/app.
Business & Economy
  • The Indian Government Signs $273 Million Loan Agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) under Rural Connectivity Investment Program for Improving Rural Roads in 5 States.
    • Those Five states are Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal
    • Important Points to Note
      • This loan represents the third tranche, which is also the last tranche of the $800 million financing facility under the Rural Connectivity Investment Program. 
      • The loan will help in constructing over 6,000 kilometers of all-weather rural roads in the aforesaid five States, benefiting over 4200 rural habitations.
  • The Government has liberalised Foreign Direct Investment, FDI norms in 15 major sectors of the economy to further boost the investment environment and to bring in more foreign investment in the country.
    • These sectors include mining, civil aviation, defence, broadcasting, construction, manufacturing and private sector banking.
    • The reforms are aimed at further easing, rationalizing and simplifying the FDI process and to put more and more FDI proposals on automatic route instead of Government route.
    • Note : The most important reform is in the construction sector.
