International Affairs
  • Today (9th October) is World Post Day.
    • This day commemorates the date for the establishment of Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland.
    • It was declared as World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo in 1969 and since then, it is celebrated all over the world to highlight the importance of the postal services.

  • Today is World Egg Day.
    • This is an international event that celebrates the egg all around the world.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee will make an official visit to Jordan, Palestine and Israel from October 10th to 15th.
    • This will be the first visit by a President of India to Jordan in the 65 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. 
    • Note : King Abdullah of Jordan and Queen Rania had visited India in 2006.

National Affairs
  • India Post began National Postal Week celebrations from today to create awareness about the
    role of postal sector in the lives of people and business and its contribution to social and economic development.
    • The celebrations, which will conclude on October 15, are also aimed at generating a broader awareness about India Post's role and activities among the public and media at national level.
    • The postal department is planning to celebrate,
      • Savings Bank Day tomorrow (October 10), 
      • Mail Day on October 12, 
      • Philately Day on October 13, 
      • Postal Life Insurance Day on October 14 and 
      • Business Development Day on October 15th

  • AAP govt sacks its Food and Supplies Minister Asim Ahmed Khan.
    • The minister has been sacked on charges of corruption.

Science & Technology
  • Government today launched UTS on mobile, a Mobile app under the Digital India programme to save time and avoid the usage of paper for tickets.
    • With this app , Passengers can avail paperless season tickets on mobile phones on Central, Western and Northern Railway.
    • The passengers have to download the mobile application from google play store or window store and can book single journey ticket and platform ticket by chossing appropriate option on the app.

Awards & Honors
  • The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the ‎Nobel Peace Prize‬ for 2015 is to be awarded to the Tunisian‬ National Dialogue Quartet for its decisive contribution to the building of a pluralistic democracy in Tunisia in the wake of the Jasmine Revolution of 2011.

Deaths
  • Veteran music director Ravindra Jain passed away today.
    • Ravindra Jain had composed music for hit films like 'Chor Machaye Shor', 'Geet Gaata Chal', 'Chitchor', ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’, ‘Do Jasoos’, ‘Heena’ and 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se'. During the 1980s and 1990s, Mr. Jain widely composed music for many mythological movies and television serials.
    • Mr. Jain was awarded Padmashri this year and won the Filmfare Award for Best Music for ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ in 1985.

New Appointments
  • Veteran atomic scientist Dr Sekhar Basu has been appointed as New Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission. 
    • His key contribution to the nation, the INS Arihant, is powered by a nuclear rector of less than 100 MW and is fuelled using enriched uranium.
    • Dr RK Sinha, the current chief of the nuclear program, retires on October 23.

  • South Africa wins the T-20 series against India 2-0.
    • The Third match in Kolkata's Eden Garden washed out.
  • India beat New Zealand 3-2 in 3rd Hockey Test in christ church.
  • Indo-Swiss tennis pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis enter China Open final.
