  • Today (28th September) is World Rabies day.
    • World Rabies Day is an international campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization with headquarters in the US and UK.

  • Nepal has imposed nationwide restrictions on vehicle use due to growing fears of a fuel shortage, as protesters seeking changes to a new constitution vowed to keep blocking a major border trade route.
    • Drivers are allowed on the roads only on alternate days, depending on whether their licence plates end in odd or even numbers, to try to counter the effect of the blockade imposed on the India-Nepal border.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds bilateral meetings with World leaders including British counterpart and French President in New York on the last leg of his two nation visit.

  • Nation paid homage to great freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his 108th birth anniversary today.
  • The 188th Gunners Day was celebrated today.
    • The Regiment of Artillery in India was raised on September 28, 1827 as 5 Bombay Mountain Battery as part of the Bombay Army in the Presidency of Bombay and it's now celebrated as Gunners' Day.
    • Note : They're known as gunners as they handled guns and artillery equipment.

Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched "Astrosat", India's first
    dedicated satellite for astronomy research
    from Sriharikota along with six small foreign satellites.
    • Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C30) carried Astrosat and six other satellites -  four identical nano-satellites of Spire Global Inc., the US, a micro-satellite from Indonesia and a nano-satellite of the University of Toronto, Canada.

Business & Economy
  • Forward Market Commission (FMC) merges with SEBI.
    • In the first ever merger of two regulators, the Forward Markets Commission (FMC), which is an over 60-year-old commodities regulatory body, was merged with capital markets watchdog Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
    • The commodities market entities would get a timeframe of up to one year to adjust to the new regulations as they would have to follow the same norms that are applicable to their peers in the equity segment.
    • SEBI : Sebi was set up in 1988 as a non-statutory body for regulating the securities markets. It became an autonomous body in 1992 with fully independent powers.
      • SEBI Chairman : U K Sinha
    • FMC : FMC has been regulating commodities markets since 1953, but lack of powers has led to wild fluctuations and alleged irregularities remaining untamed in this market segment.

  • Market regulator SEBI increases surveillance of SMSes, Whatsapp and Social Media to keep a check on investment scams.

Awards & Honors
  • Mathematician Jacob Tsimerman of the University of Toronto, Canada was honored with SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for the year 2015.
    • Founded by Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) University in 2005 after the name of the genius mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize is awarded every year to a young mathematician.
    • Note : The age limit for the prize is 32 years as Ramanujan died at 32. The current prize money for the award is 10000 US Dollars.

  • Lewis Hamilton wins Japanese Grand Prix 2015 ahead of Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel.
