International Affairs
  • Today (10th August) is International Biodiesel day.
    • During the 1850s two scientists named as E. Duffy and J. Patrick had designed the first diesel engine
    • After that another renowned scientist named as Rudolf Diesel built a prime model of diesel engine with a 10 feet iron cylinder and flywheel at its base.
    • This model was powered for the first time on 10th August 1893 in Augsburg, Germany. Thereafter this day is celebrated as International biodiesel day.
  • Typhoon Soudelor has killed 14 people in eastern China causing the heaviest rains in a century.

National Affairs
  • The Rajasthan High Court today banned Jain ritual of 'Santhara' making it punishable under
    section 306 and 309 IPC (Abetment of Suicide).
    • The ancient ritual, which is also called as Sallekhana, is the voluntary starvation to embrace death.
    • The Swethambar (White sect) community, which practise the age-old ritual, considers it the ultimate way to attain moksha, when one believes that his life has served its purpose.
    • On average 240 Jains practice sallekhana until death each year in India.
  • Government has launched Suraksha Bandhan drive, an innovative drive to combine its Social Security Schemes with festival of Raksha Bandhan.
    • This drive will facilitate enrolment under social security schemes through innovative schemes like gift cheques and special deposits.
    • The drive will reach out to the pool of eligible bank account holders who are yet to be enrolled under these schemes - namely the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for accident and disability cover of up to Rs.2 lakh at an annual premium of Rs.12 and the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) for a term life cover of Rs.2 lakh at an annual premium of Rs.330.
  • The Supreme Court today allowed the repairing of covers and providing other facilities at the makeshift Ram Lalla Temple at the disputed site in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya town.
  • The Government has launched the School Nursery Yojana, an initiative to bring students closer to nature, by involving them in raising of saplings in nurseries created in schools. 
    • The underlying theme of the Yojana is to plant a tree for sustainable future and to make the nation clean and green. 
    • Under the Yojana, students will sow the seeds, grow saplings in the school nursery, as part of practical exercise for Biology classes and extra-curricular activities for students of other streams. 
    • The students will also carry out a tree census in their school and the locality.
    • Ten thousands schools will be covered across the country under the scheme in next three years. 
    • The selected schools will receive grant of Rs 25,000 in the first year and Rs 10,000 per year for the subsequent two years.

  • In a first, Ajeet Kumar Saroj, a culpable homicide convict  lodged in Varanasi central jail has been awarded a gold medal by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for topping in Diploma in Tourism Studies (DTS).

  • Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has launched "Disha", a mobile app in Bihar to aid digital literacy in the state.
    • Thisis expected to help people learn about computers and Internet through self learning modules. 
    • It is free and available on Google Play Store.

Deaths
  • Kannada poet and freedom fighter, Kayyara Kinhanna Rai ( 101-year-old) passed away.
    • He was in the forefront of the movement to merge the Kannada-speaking region north of the Chandragiri river with Karnataka to fulfil its linguistic and development aspirations after the 1957 States reorganisation. 
    • Mr. Rai founded Kasaragod Vileenekarana Kriya Samiti to fight for the cause.

Business & Economy
  • India retains its top spot as the world’s largest exporter of beef, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and has extended its lead over the next highest exporter, Brazil. 
  • Shanghai-based smartphone maker Phicomm has announced that it is going to invest around $1 billion (Rs6400 crore) in India by 2017-end in setting up five business units including mobile phones, SOHO, Enterprise, Cloud services and Intelligent Cities in a phased manner.
  • The Government has capped the subsidy payout on kerosene at Rs 12 per litre and domestic cooking gas (LPG) at Rs 18 per kg.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee today presented the 24th 'Saraswati Sammaan' for the year 2014 to Lok Sabha MP Dr. M. Veerappa Moily.
    • Dr. M Veerappa Moily received this award for his Epic ‘Sri Ramayana Mahanveshanam’ written in Kannada
  • Indian sociobiologist Raghavendra Gadagkar was awarded Germany's highest civilian honour - the Cross of Order of the Merit
    • He was bestowed with the honour for contribution in the field of behavioural ecology and sociobiology, and also for works in strengthening research corporation between India and Germany.

  • Senior Indian hockey player ‎Gurbaj Singh‬ suspended for 9 months for indulging in groupism and creating disharmony within team.
  • World Badminton Championships 2015 began in Jakarta
    • For the first time that India will have two players in the top 5 ranking.
      • They are,
        • Saina (World No 2 in women's singles) 
        • Srikanth (World No 3 in men's singles) 
    • Indian shuttlers Parupalli Kashyap and H S Prannoy win their opening round matches.
