National Affairs
  • The Rajasthan Assembly has passed a law that bans the slaughter, trading and unauthorised transportation of Camels.
    • The Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Bill, 2015 also makes causing injury to camel punishable.
    • Important Note : Camel had been declared as Rajasthan's State animal last year.
  • Rajasthan became the first State in the country to fix a minimum educational qualification for contesting elections to the Panchayati Raj Institutions.
    • The Assembly has passed the Rajasthan Panchayati Raj (amendment) Bill, 2015, which makes,
      • Class VIII pass mandatory for the post of sarpanch elections (except in tribal reserved areas, where the minimum qualification is Class V)
      • Class X for Zila Parishad or Panchayat Samiti elections.
  • PM Narendra Modi is leaving for Singapore tonight to attend the funeral of former PM of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew.
    • Govt has already declared national mourning tomorrow as mark of respect to Lee Kuan Yew. 
    • National flag will be flown at half-mast throughout the country and there will be no official entertainment.
    • 91-year-old Lee, Singapore's founding father who dominated the country's politics for more than half a century,died of severe pneumonia on 23rd of this month.
  • The number of world famous one-horned rhinos in Assam's Kaziranga National Park has increased to over 2,400, according to a latest census released today.
    • The census, conducted by Assam's forest department, counted 2,401 rhinos, which indicated increase of 71 rhinos in the park in the past two years.

  • Indian-American biology professor, Murty S Kambhampati, chosen for prestigious US presidential award for excellence in the field of science, mathematics and engineering mentoring.
  • India's space agency -- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) -- has been selected for the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2014.

    • Gandhi Peace Prize : 
      • The Gandhi Peace Prize was instituted in 1995
      • It is given to individual or organisation for making social, economic and political transformation through non-violence means.
      • The award comprises of cash prize of Rs one crore and a citation.
      • Some of the previous awardees of Gandhi Peace Prize were Nelson Mandela, Vaclav Havel, Julius K. Nyerere, Baba Amte, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan and Ramkrishna Mission.

  • Mizoram Governor Dr Aziz Qureshi was sacked from his post by President Pranab Mukherjee today.

Deaths
  • Former Mizoram chief minister Brig Thenphunga Sailo (93) passed away.
    • He worked in the British Indian army in 1942 as a junior officer.
    • He was promoted to the rank of brigadier of Indian army in 1966
    • He formed a political party called Mizoram Peoples Conference in April 17, 1975 and it won the Mizoram union territory elections in 1977 and he became the second chief minister of the state.
Science & Technology
  • India successfully launches 4th navigation satellite-IRNSS-1D
    • Launched by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C27)
    • IRNSS-1D is 4th in the series of 7 navigation satellites meant to create India’s own navigation system.
