International Affairs
  • Today (22nd March 2015) is World Water Day.
    • This day is a United Nations initiative to celebrate clean water and bring attention to those who don’t have enough of it.
    • It's also a day to understand the valuable significance of water, discuss and conserve this finite resource in the future.
    • It's important to remember that a drop of water is powerful and life giving.
    • This year's theme : "Water and Sustainable Development"
  • India and China will hold the 18th round of border talks in Delhi from Monday (23rd March)— the first round of negotiations after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power last year — where the two sides are expected to focus on clarification of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
    • Special Representative and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval would hold talks with his Chinese counterpart and State Councillor Yang Jiechi amid hopes to clinch a solution under the strong leadership in both the countries.
    • The two-day talks is taking place in the backdrop of candid discussions between Mr. Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during latter’s visit to Delhi in September

    • The President also conferred 14 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, three Uttam Yudh Seva Medals and 26 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals on senior officers of the armed forces for distinguished service of an exceptional order.
  • Former Sri Lankan army chief Sarath Fonseka was today conferred the country's highest military rank of field marshal for "achieving victory over terrorism" by the new government, five years after he was jailed on alleged treason charges by the previous regime.
    • Fonseka became the first Sri Lankan to receive the title.

  • Katherine Viner will be the next editor-in-chief of The Guardian, the Pulitzer prize-winning newspaper and website that is widely read and respected for its independent voice and investigative strengths.
    • She is the first woman to run the newspaper in its 194-year history.
Deaths
  • Renowned Malayalam poet Yusufali Kechery, who left a deep impression in Kerala's cultural realm as a lyricist, passed away.
    • He had worked as assistant secretary of Kerala Sangaeetha Nataka Academy and also served as the president of Kerala Sahitya Academy.
Business & Economy
  • India has overtaken the US to become the third-largest steel producer in the world with a production of 14.56 million tonnes (MT) in first two months of the year.
    • India has been the fourth-largest steel producer for the past five years, behind China, Japan and the US.
  • The 6,000-MW Mithivirdi Nuclear Power Plant in Bhavnagar district has got coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) nod from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEFCC).
    • The clearance for setting up of “intake and outfall facility” for the 6,000-MW plant at Mithivirdi, about 40 kms from Bhavnagar, is seen as a big boost for Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) that has been facing severe opposition from local farmers and social activists.
Sports
  • Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have lifted the Women’s Doubles trophy of the Indian Wells Open Tennis tournament at California.
    • It was Sania’s 24th career title, and the second Doubles trophy this year.
