  • Brazilians voted today for the next leader of the world's seventh-largest economy
    • Some 143 million people have chosen between leftist incumbent Rousseff and Social Democrat Aecio Neves, scion of a famous political family. 
  • Tunisians Voted today for First Permanent Assembly Since Revolt.  
    • Tunisia was the first North African country to topple its government in a popular uprising in 2010 and has been relatively peaceful since.
    • This parliament will be the first permanent National Assembly since Tunisia's historic 2011 revolution, an event that inspired similar popular uprisings across the Arab world. Presidential elections follow next month.
  • British troops and US Marines have officially ended their Afghanistan combat missions

  • Puducherry has recording a suicide rate of 35.6 per lakh population last year (most of them are students).
    • All-India level suicide rate was only 11.0 per lakh population

New Appointments
  • Rear Admiral Atul Kumar Jain today assumed office as Chief of Staff of Southern Naval Command in Kochi.
  • Former Union minister Jairam Ramesh has been named to chair a global research platform panel on sustainable development instituted by an alliance of organisations such as UNEP, UNESCO and World Meteorological Organization (WMO). 
Business & Economy
  • With 62.41 million tonnes output, India remains the world’s fourth largest steel producer in the first nine months of the current year, preceded by China, Japan and the US.
  • As banks in Switzerland come under greater black money scrutiny, the quantum of gold having left Swiss shores for India so far this year has reached a record high level of over 11 billion Swiss francs (about Rs 70,000 crore).
  • Tightening the noose around erring foreign-funded NGOs, the government has ordered that all voluntary organisations henceforth will have to make payments exceeding Rs 20,000 through account payee cheques or drafts.
Deaths
  • Jack Bruce, the composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, most famous for being part of 1960s group Cream has died aged 71.

  • Sania Mirza (India) and Cara Black (Zimbabwe) lift the Doubles trophy of the WTA Finals in Singapore.
  • Indian Golfer Anirban Lahiri wins the Venetian Macau Open.
