INTERNATIONAL EVENTS
  • Ukraine's deputy prime minister said that his financially troubled country will soon sign a trade and cooperation deal with the EU after the bloc promised more aid to the former Soviet republic.
  • Bangladesh's Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of an Islamist leader, Abdul Kader Mullah.
  • A National Security Agency official said in an interview released that he would be open to cutting an amnesty deal with intelligence leaker Edward Snowden if he agreed to stop divulging secret documents.
  • A court in central Vietnam has sentenced five people, including four women, to death and another to life in prison for trafficking heroin from neighbouring Laos.
  • UN chief Ban Ki-moon called on the international community to sanction those responsible for Syrian chemical weapons attacks documented.

NATIONAL EVENTS
  • The C Rangarajan panel recommended the guidelines prescribing bailout packages for developers of highway projects and the task of implementation lie with the National Highway Authority of India.
  • Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan has been named the most powerful celebrity of 2013 by Forbes India for the second time in a row.
  • Gujarat will soon have an exclusive sanctuary for cows, near Porbandar, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. The state also plans to set up animal ‘hostels’ to shelter cows owned by Maldharis (pastoralists) and keep them away from city roads.
  • The Tata Relief Committee and the Government of Uttarakhand have signed a memorandum of understanding towards community rehabilitation and reconstruction in response to the impact of the floods and landslides in June 2013.
  • The Russian tourists visiting Goa will now get round-the-clock online assistance with the opening of a Russian Information Centre.
  • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)  asked the Centre to suitably modify Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which violates human rights of the LGBT community.
  • National Energy Conservation Day to being observed today.
  • Two-day Kashmir International Film Festival to begin today at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre on the banks of Dal Lake.

APPOINTMENTS
  • Vasundhara Raje took oath as the chief minister of Rajasthan, five days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept to power crushing the Congress.
  • The world's largest retailer Walmart named Krish Iyer as the chief executive of its India unit. He will replace interim CEO Ramnik Narsey late next month.
  • Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag, who heads Eastern Command, was today designated as the Vice-Chief of Army Staff.

SPORTS
  • India clinched the women's Kabaddi World Cup championship for the third time in a row, defeating debutant New Zealand 49-21 in the summit clash played at Guru Gobind Singh sports complex .
  • Rising Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has bagged the 'Emerging Cricketer of the Year' trophy at the ICC Annual awards announced in Dubai
