International Affairs
  • Vince Cable, UK's Secretary of State for Business, is  on a four-day visit to India during which he will hold talks with senior ministers and meet captains of industry.
  • Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said that Canada will make a claim to the North Pole, but has not finished the science around its Arctic seabed claim.

National Affairs
  • President Pranab Mukherjee is among over 90 heads of state and government who attend an emotional memorial service in South Africa tomorrow for anti-apartheid legend Nelson Mandela, making it one of the largest such gatherings in generations.
  • The None of the Above (NOTA) option introduced recently was exercised by 49,892 voters in the assembly polls with an average of 700 per constituency.
  • As of November 2013, there were 4,83,103 women directors on boards of firms (including state-owned entities) registered under the Companies Act, Corporate Affairs Minister Sachin Pilot said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.    
  • In the infamous Adarsh scam, the parliamentary public accounts committee (PAC) on Monday slammed the Union defence ministry, Maharashtra government and armed forces for abject mismanagement of defence land.
  • The Government has said new metro rail projects were under consideration in several cities including Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Pune, Tri-city of Chandigarh, Punchkula and Mohali.
  • An estimated 4.21 crore population in the country may be at risk due to chemical contamination in drinking water, Government said.

  • The union ministry of urban development has approved the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-assisted Rs 1178.75 crore Guwahati sewerage project.
  • Bank unions have called a one-day strike on December 18 to protest against the decision of the Reserve Bank of India to accord national treatment to foreign banks.
  • The Cabinet has fixed the minimum price for selling telecom spectrum at up to half the rate set at the previous auction to net at least Rs 48,000 crore in revenue from the sale planned in January.

  • India bagged a silver and a bronze medal  (Tarundeep Rai - silver medal, Atanu Das - bronze) in the men's recurve section at the Indoor Archery World Cup in Singapore.
  • Ranji Trophy: Karnataka beat Haryana by three wickets at Rohtak
  • A Parliamentary panel slammed the armed forces for "gross misuse" of golf courses under them and asked the Defence Ministry to hold an inquiry into the prohibited activities on defence land and take steps to check misuse.
