Business and Economy
  • The Centre unveiled a package to help the cash-starved sugar mills, which includes a soft loan of Rs 7,200 crore to settle the amounts due to sugarcane farmers.
  • SC issues notice to Centre, RBI on PIL seeking probe against PriceWaterhouseCoopers for alleged violation of FDI rules and fudged documents.
  • Investors are no longer required to pay stamp duty relating to agreements on demat account under the new guidelines introduced by market regulator Sebi, a move that will help save costs during registration with the securities market.
  • The government modified FDI policy allowing unlisted companies to directly list on stock exchanges abroad to raise funds for acquisitions or retiring overseas debts, a move which may help India in containing high current account deficit.
  • In a major victory for India, the WTO on Friday agreed to allow countries to provide subsidy on staple food crops without any threat of punitive action, a concession that salvaged the current round of world trade talks from the brink of collapse.
