International Affairs

• A Cairo court has adjourned to August 17 the retrial of former President Hosni Mubarak over charges of corruption and involvement in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ousted him.
• Syria's main opposition on Saturday elected Mr Ahmad Assi Jarba to lead the movement which groups opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, spokesman Khaled Saleh said.
• National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon is scheduled to visit Colombo next week to hold talks on a tri-lateral maritime security treaty among India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
• Gunmen believed to be Islamists from Nigeria's Boko Haram insurgent group killed 42 people, mostly students, in an overnight attack on a secondary school in restive Yobe state, a medical worker and residents said Saturday.
• Egypt's interim President Adly Mansour on Saturday held talks with the army chief and interior minister to discuss ways to ensure security amid violent clashes between supporters and opponents of deposed President Mohammed Morsi that claimed at least 36 lives.
• Committing to maintain peace and tranquility on the boundary, India and China today agreed that it was an "important guarantor" for growth in ties and in this context pledged to early conclusion of negotiations on a proposed pact aimed at avoiding flare-ups on the border.
• The two Koreas have held rare talks on the reopening of a joint industrial zone, seen as the last remaining symbol of cross-border reconciliation.
• A strong 6.4-magnitude quake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Saturday, by US Geological Survey.

• Laxman Hembram, a 17-year-old tribal student of Odisha, has been invited to participate in the Malala Day United Nations Youth Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York on July 12.
• A group of 25 students and five teachers from various government-run schools across DimaHasao and Cachar districts of Assam left for Delhi, Agra and Mathura on a 15-day tour on Tuesday as part of the national integration tour organized by the Madras regiment of the Indian Army.
• Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily arrived in Baghdad today with a high level delegation as India looks to expand cooperation in energy and other sectors with post-war Iraq.Moily is leading a 28-member delegation to take part in the 17th India-Iraq Joint Commission on Economic and Technical Cooperation tomorrow.
• In a move that would boost marine tourism in the state, Tamil Nadu would soon have a world class marine aquarium at Mamallapuram, which would house acrylic glass tunnels among other features.
• International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) Rocks 2013 celebrates 100 years of Indian cinema in Macau.
• Eminent poet and Jnanpith laureate ONV Kurup has been selected for this year's P Keshavadev Literary Award.
• Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Union Minister of Culture Chandresh Kumari Katoch will inaugurate the second planetarium of the State.
• The Union ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation will grant Rs 200 crore to Uttarakhand to help reconstruction of residential buildings destroyed in the recent calamity.

• Sawani, who has been appointed by the BCCI as commissioner of inquiry to probe spot-fixing allegations involving Rajasthan Royals players, will submit his findings to the disciplinary committee which will send its recommendations to the working committee that will announce the final verdict.
• Indian racing driver Armaan Ebrahim and BMW Team India clinched their maiden podium of the 2013 FIA GT World Series, finishing second in the Pro-Am category and a brilliant ninth overall at the Zandvoort Circuit .
• Marion Bartoli of France new Wimbledon women’s single champion, beat Sabine Lisicki by 6-1 6-4.
• The Indian challenge in women's singles came to an end at the Asian Table Tennis Championships with Olympian Ankita Das joining the ranks of defeated compatriots K Shamini and Mouma Das at the Sajik Gymnasium.
• Gold continued to elude India but the country's weightlifters added three silver and a bronze medal to their tally on the second day of the 20th Women's and 27th Men's Asian Junior Championships in Bishkek, Krygyzstan.
• Ireland, Netherlands will lock horns in a double header of ICC World Cricket League Championship to ensure their qualification for WC 2015.
• International Olympic Committee postpones Indian Olympic Association's elections by a month.
