International Affairs

  • The Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Kumari Selja inaugurated the 12th National Meeting of the State Commissioners for Persons with Disabilities to review implementation of PwD Act here today. The Minister in her address said that a meeting of this kind provides an important forum for exchanging views and experiences. The meeting will also help promoting a culture of shared learning and understanding of critical issues around implementation of the PwD Act, 1995.
  • Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari today held consultations with representatives of print and the broadcasting industry on the issue of increasing FDI limits in the media sector.
  • In tune with its operational drive to turn "stealthy" because surprise and deception are crucial in modern-day warfare, the Navy inducted its latest guided-missile stealth frigate INS Trikhand on Saturday.
  • Entering the last phase of relief operations in flood-hit Uttarakhand, the Indian Air Force today said it has completed the evacuation of stranded pilgrims in Harsil using 26 of its aircraft there.

  • Alok Industries, the $2-billion textile major, has started the process to sell UK retail chain Store Twenty One, which it had acquired five years ago. The move tracks the selloff activity by Indian organizations of their overseas assets as the weakening global economy impacts business. The sale is part of Alok's strategy to focus on sustainable profit growth oriented units.
  • Gold seems to be slowly losing its sheen. Prices dropped to a 22-month low in the domestic market and near three-year lows in global markets.
  • The rupee firmed up by 81paise against the dollar to 59.39 on Friday, up from Thursday's close of 60.20. The rupee rallied after share prices soared in the equity markets following the government's decision to raise prices of natural gas for the first time in three years.
