INTERNATIONAL EVENTS
  • A gas explosion in an underground coal mine in central China killed 10 of the 39 workers in a shaft, local authorities said Monday.
  • A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake has hit Taiwan, killing one person and violently shaking buildings in the capital Taipei.
  • At least 119 people were killed and 54 others injured on Monday in a major fire at a poultry processing plant in northeast China, in what could be the country's deadliest inferno in over a decade.
  • The Palestinian president on Sunday picked a little-known academic as his new prime minister, according to the official government news agency, following the resignation of his chief rival.Mahmoud Abbas appointed Rami Hamdallah to replace Salam Fayyad, a respected U.S.-educated economist.
  • Saudi Arabia has reported that three more people have died from a new respiratory virus related to SARS, bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 24.
  • In a historic milestone for the Sikhs in Pakistan, Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora has become the first person from the minority community to enter the Punjab province assembly, since the country's independence in 1947.

  • Sensex recovers 100 pts in early trade, Infosys jumps 7.74 pc to Rs 2,594 following return of NR Narayana Murthy as its Executive Chairman.

ENTERTAINMENT
  • Queen Elizabeth II was marking the 60th anniversary of her coronation in private on Sunday after indulging in her passion for horses with a day at the races.The 87-year-old monarch and her husband Prince Philip spent Saturday at the Epsom Derby, echoing the events of a year ago that kicked off her diamond jubilee party.
